A six-wicket haul from Ben Hilfenhaus was not enough to prevent Western Australia claiming first-innings points at the WACA. After Tasmania were bowled out for 248 on the first day, the Warriors managed to reach 279, thanks largely to some late striking from Sam Whiteman and Nathan Coulter-Nile, which meant Hilfenhaus' 6 for 82 went somewhat in vain for the Tigers.
Marcus North set things up with 87 at the top of the order but at 6 for 179 it looked like the Warriors might fail to match Tasmania's score. But Whiteman and Coulter-Nile put on a brisk 60 for the eighth wicket to earn them the points before Coulter-Nile was caught behind off Hilfenhaus for 34 and Whiteman fell for 55.
By stumps, Tasmania had the lead again and had moved on to 2 for 78 in their second innings, 47 in front of the Warriors. Ed Cowan was on 16 and George Bailey was on 8.
