A left-arm spinner who toiled at club level in Melbourne for several seasons, Michael Beer moved to Western Australia during the 2010 off season as the Warriors searched for a frontline spinner. He took five wickets for the match against the touring England side in 2010-11 and was a shock selection in Australia's squad for the Perth Test in December, despite having made only five first-class appearances. It wasn't until the Sydney Test, the last of the Ashes series, that Beer won a baggy green, and while he picked up just one wicket he bowled well enough to remain in the selectors' minds. There was no Cricket Australia contract in 2011 but he was retained for the Test series in Sri Lanka.
