Ferguson sends down a wide down the leg side and it's all over
Australia vs New Zealand, 1st ODI at Cairns, AUS v NZ, Sep 06 2022 - Match Result
Australia won by 2 wickets (with 30 balls remaining)
Green is the Player of the Match: Little bit tired and sore but we have a couple days off, so it's good. Credit to Zampa, he was a finisher in the end. It's my groin, calf, hamstring, everything. I should be fine for the next game. Carey batted beautifully, there was no real pressure on us, we tried to bat normally. First ODI fifty means a lot, always nice the first one.
Kane Williamson: It ebbed and flowed, it was a tricky surface and we wanted a few more runs on the board. The way Green and Carey played, it was an outstanding partnership. We were one wicket away from closing in. We certainly tried, they were five down, just weren't able to get that breakthrough. We adapted to the conditions really quickly. It was difficult to get a rhythm while batting and hit through the line. We had to scrap, always want a few more, we'll assess a reasonable performance.
Aaron Finch: It's [heart beat] a little bit high, we've made a habit of these chases. Carey and Green soaked a lot of pressure at the start and it was brilliant, it would have been better had they taken it till the end but credit to New Zealand for coming back. Our start wasn't ideal against Boult. There's still a bit to work on. Green will be sore and tired, he was cramping in his legs first, then arms as well. It's just his 11th game.
That's all we have today from this cracking ODI series opener in Cairns. Australia take a 1-0 lead and 10 points for the Super League. The remaining games are also in Cairns, and the next one is day after. Stay tuned for more action. We'll bring you more post-match coverage from Andrew McGlashan, and there's the Asia Cup game starting in 90 minutes from now. For now it's goodbye and good luck from me, Vishal Dikshit, and Sudarshanan. Ciao! Stay safe.
Sampath tells me: 233 is the highest target chased down by any team after losing five wickets inside 50 runs. Previous highest was 231 by Kenya vs Canada in 2007.
10.13pm An entertaining night in Cairns comes to an end, and what a way to return to the city for International cricket after eight years. There was plenty of action right from the first over - a review followed by a stunning catch from Maxwell, some tight bowling from Australia which ended with Maxwell taking four and Hazlewood three. And who would have thought 233 would be so difficult to chase in an ODI. Boult's swing, Henry's pace and seam movement reduced Australia to 44 for 5. But when it looked like New Zealand would take the game away with one or two more wickets, Carey and Green put on a fighting century stand and brought right Australia back. Australia lost wickets again, Green was down with cramps but he took them across the line eventually. New Zealand played some poor cricket in the end in my view. Early on as well, they should have given Boult another over - a sixth - in his first spell when he was red hot with the ball, and it's the new ball that he's best with. Later on too, they bowled slightly wide to Zampa and gave easy singles when Australia needed Green back on strike. A dramatic finish - with a sprinkle of rain - went Australia's way eventually.
Scores are level and Ferguson has the ball
Zampa makes room, Santner follows him and Zampa flicks it past a diving midwicket fielder for a single to mid-on
Two to get and mid-off comes in
width for Zampa, he steers it wide of point in the gap and calls for two immediately, Green is really struggling, and the throw comes in at the wrong end, to Zampa's instead of Green's
10.09pm Just three minutes lost, we're set to resume
10.06pm Four runs to go and it's raining heavier now, the umpires get together and they're going off! It's not that heavy, thankfully. Only the pitch is covered, only Zampa and Green are off the field, and New Zealand are still out there. Australia are ahead of the par score. They're coming back, don't go anywhere, people. Green and Zampa are coming back, it's not raining anymore
swept to the midwicket boundary, it's Zampa not Green! He goes down on a knee and smokes that length ball to the boundary, just beating long-on
some width for Green and he punches it square for an easy single
Fazu: "@Vishal, how do we know it's the same James?" Back to you, James
goes back to steer the short of length ball to deep cover and gives the strike to Green
tight on the stumps, he blocks it back
Green cramping again, the physio is out for more treatment. Green is walking very gingerly and there's some rain as well, the only drama element that was missing. Green is back, Santner's last over
James : "Do or die here for both teams. Three or 4 boundaries and Aus win, 2 wickets and it is New Zealands game." Here it is, guys
backs away again, it's short of length and wide, and Zampa steers it to deep point. They go for the single and Zampa keeps strike
Yorker for the last ball?
makes room to slay it away but doesn't connect at all
short of length towards leg again, swiped to fine leg and Green wants one but Zampa isn't prepared for it maybe because Green is cramping, but finally makes it
FahadMQ: "Another James feedback and New Zealand will win it "
pitched up outside off now, driven down straight to mid-off
whipped for four to long leg! Not a great line on the pads and Green swipes it away behind square and far enough from the deep fine leg fielder
full outside off, Green drives and gets a thin edge rolling back to the keeper
Ferguson's speed from the other end. Deep third and fine leg drop back. Long-on is deep, mid-off is in. 16 to go, Green stands between New Zealand and victory
77.7kmh, nicely bowled on length on middle and turns it away towards off, Zampa waits and defends after the turn
leans forward and steers it square to point
Santner gets two more balls at Zampa
sweeps it successfully this time for a single to deep midwicket
Adil hamdulay: "Surely Cam Green is next big thing for Australia in longer formats" In this format too
75.2kmh, slows it down a long way outside off on length, Green is too early into his sweep and misses it completely
slams the wide delivery outside off straight to cover
tossed up a long way outside off, turns away further for a wide. Pressure showing
Will Green go big? Midwicket is deep
poor line on the pads and Zampa tucks it off the hips for an easy single
Zampa on strike now, can Green take a quick single? 19 more to go. Santner gets the ball and he and Williamson keep fine leg and short third in the circle. Point goes deep now
