finally pitches one, gets it full on fifth stump and it's driven tamely to long-on.
Tridents vs Patriots, 2nd Match at Tarouba, CPL, Aug 18 2020 - Ball by Ball Commentary
That's a wrap for tonight from the opening doubleheader of CPL 2020. Come back again tomorrow. For Venkat Raghav on scorekeeping duties, I'm Peter Della Penna. Take care!
Patriots captain Rayad Emrit: "I think with the start that we got in the field, 8 for 3, I thought we let it slip. They probably got 20-30 runs too much. The last five overs we probably got 3 or 4 boundaries and chasing 150 on a tricky wicket, it's very difficult to get over the line if you're not hitting boundaries. They bowled a lot smarter than us and used their skill better than us."
Tridents captain Jason Holder: "It's really important to start this competition well so it's really good to get points on the board. The partnership between Hayden and Rashid was outstanding to bat out the rest of the overs so credit to those two. The pitch was a little slow. Once you went back of a length into the wicket, it was hard to get hold of. Rashid Khan bowled outstanding and Hayden played a crucial part coming in with his two overs. Our bowlers have been key to our success the last two years."
Mitchell Santner is named Man of the Match: "I think credit has to go to the way St Kitts bowled up front. To take 3 wickets in the Powerplay is incredible. We probably went a bit too hard but we scrapped really well. It shows the depth of our batting lineup. To get 150, we were pretty happy with that. We took momentum from Rashid's finish into the bowling. We thought it was competitive. If you bowled into the deck, there was a little bit there. It was pretty tough. The ball was pretty wet, felt like a bar of soap in a pool. You've got to expect that here, the night games can get quite dewy. As a collective, we bowled really well."
9.30 pm Meet second half of the chase for the Patriots. It was set up well for Da Silva and Dunk to take them home but the defending champs showed their mettle with the ball. New arrival Rashid Khan swung momentum in the 18th over with two wickets in two balls, aided in part by a brilliant catch in the deep by Hayden Walsh Jr, to leave Patriots stumbling on the ropes. Joshua Da Silva's CPL debut is a mixed bag. Ends unbeaten on 41 off 41 balls, survived a testing spell from Rashid but couldn't accelerate once set to help Patriots over the line. It was far from glamorous but the Tridents start their title defense with a gritty win.
barring a wide or no ball. Tridents have this clinched with 8 needed off 1.
thigh high full toss on the stumps, Tanvir clocks this high and deep over midwicket for maximum.
full toss wide outside off, left alone and will have to rebowl.
short ball dug into the pitch on middle, drags this along the ground to deep midwicket.
low full toss at shin height wide outside off, shoveled to long-off for one.
low full toss trailing down leg. Wide if he left it and couldn't manage to lift it for six either as a fine edge trickles to deep fine leg.
Rib height full toss this time on fifth stump, Tanvir with a tame swipe but gets out of jail with a no ball rightfully called on height. 19 off 4 becomes 18 off 5.
another full toss swung over by a Patriots batsman. Knee height on sixth stump, but Tanvir flails over it.
One over from Rashid has tipped the scales dramatically in favor of the Tridents. Patriots lacked a sense of urgency through the second half of this chase and it played into the Tridents hands tapping singles to stretch the game out. Now 20 off the final over needed, to be bowled by Mayers, who hasn't bowled since the opening over of the chase.
slower bouncer that Tanvir struggles to stay in front off, pulls it tamely to midwicket.
length ball on fourth stump, swatted with ease through the gap between wide long-on and deep midwicket, desperately needed boundary for the Patriots.
another full toss at knee height outside off, Da Silva miscues it well short of long-off.
thigh high full toss way outside off, Da Silva swings over it but not called a wide after he shuffled well past his stumps.
low full toss at knee height on fourth stump, drives a single to long-off.
low full toss outside off, slices a thick edge that is fumbled by short third man, but not enough to create a second.
googly bowled wide outside off, left alone.
full on middle, driven to long-on.
full and straight on the hat-trick ball, Tanvir whips it with ease through midwicket.
one brings two! The failure to swap strike with the ball in the air the previous delivery means Hamilton has to face the music and is out of tune trying to keep a zippy, skiddy googly out, beaten playing back with a tame waft across.
Walsh Jr shows his catching prowess once more at deep midwicket! Ramdin goes to slog sweep a full ball off middle. Walsh Jr was cheating in 15 yards off the rope. He has to backtrack while covering 20 yards going to his right before leaping full extension to take this parallel to the ground at waist height. 8/10 for Walsh Jr's standards, but far trickier for mere mortals to pull off.
googly lands full on off, Da Silva swipes this out to midwicket.
Rashid for the 18th to bowl his fourth.
