Rhodesian first-class cricket in
1930/31
Captain:
'Jock'
Speight
Percy Chapman's
English team was visiting South
Africa this season, so the Currie
Cup tournament was not played.
Rhodesia's only first-class match
was against the tourists, the
first time any official touring
team had crossed the Limpopo.
Rhodesia put up a fine
performance, although the M.C.C.,
as it was then known, were
handicapped by illness to several
players, including Chapman
himself and Wally Hammond. The
tourists were greatly indebted to
a fine second-innings century by
Maurice Leyland, which saved them
from possible severe
embarrassment. Rain also reduced
the time available for play.
At Queens Ground, Bulawayo; 6, 8,
9 December. M.C.C. 278 (R E S
Wyatt 78, A P F Chapman 48; H J
O'Reilly 3/49, D S Tomlinson
5/106) and 322 (W R Hammond 49
retired ill, M Leyland 169; R J
Crisp 3/64). RHODESIA 248 (C J R
Hayward 95, T P Symington 60, N I
Boast 33*; I A R Peebles 6/57).
Match drawn.
It is intended in the future to
include a full scorecard, and
also much more information about
all cricket in Rhodesia during
this season. At present, the next
entry in this section is for
1931/32
