This was a remarkable season for Rhodesian cricket in the Currie Cup. South Africa's leading players were touring Australia and New Zealand, but Rhodesia also had their losses, including Crisp, O'Reilly and Symington. Included in the Rhodesian team was Jackie Grant, a recent West Indian captain. Other interesting newcomers were James `Scotty' Adamson, a left-arm spinner, and pace bowler Michael Quinn, brother of the South African Test player, who both had a superb first, and only, first-class season. `Hamish' Campbell-Rodger captained the side aggressively.

The tournament was centralised in Johannesburg, making it much easier for the Rhodesians than would have been the case had they been required to travel all over South Africa. Under a modern system of scoring, Rhodesia would almost certainly have won the competition, as they won four matches outright, more than any other team, in the two days allocated to each match. However, the system awarded two points equally for an outright win and a win on first innings only, which allowed Western Province to win the Cup after only one outright victory. On the other hand, Rhodesia did not play either Western Province or Natal. Their convincing victory over Orange Free State was their first in any first-class match; although losing to Transvaal, they reeled off three further victories, including a thrilling one-wicket against Griqualand West. In this match, the last pair, newcomers Quinn and Adamson, scrambled 29 runs together to become the first provincial team in South Africa to score over 300 to win a match.
