Jack Leaning, a top-order batsman and occasional offspinner, was born in Bristol but learned the game in the York area before he made a 40-over debut for Yorkshire against Warwickshire at Scarborough in August, 2012. The following year he made a Championship and Twenty20 debut before a promising season in 2014 which included a Championship title - his best being 99 against Sussex at Arundel when a reflex catch by James Tredwell denied him a maiden Championship hundred. That hundred came instead in a 50-over match against Essex at Scarborough.

Leaning's haul of 922 Championship runs from 15 matches included three more hundreds and he was named as Yorkshire's Young Player of the Year award as well as collecting a similar award from the Cricket Writers' Club. High expectations, perhaps excessive, were not met during two mediocre seasons that followed (although he did serve up a Roses Championship hundred in 2017) when his biggest impact was made as a T20 hitter.

His father Andy was a former York City goalkeeper and Leeds United goalkeeping coach and Jack was on the books at Sheffield United before turning to cricket. He was a highly regarded junior for Yorkshire since making a century on debut for the U-13s against Cumbria at Sedbergh School.
