Harold Whitfield played for Border either side of World War Two (in which he served in the navy) as an allrounder, a middle-order batsman who was good enough to score a first-class hundred and a legspinner. He made his debut while still at school aged 18 in 1936-37 but the following season was his most successful, starting with a hundred in what was only his second match to help Border to their first win over Western Province. After the war his batting gave way more to his bowling and he also went on to captain his province. A good allround sportsman, he also represented Border at hockey and golf. Whitfield enjoyed a colourful life. He once opened the battling with the Duke of Edinburgh (they had served on the same ship) and claimed to have dined with Vivien Leigh. After cricket he became a successful businessman and turned his attention to golf, becoming president of the SA Golf Union.
