A handy offspinner who has in his arsenal the carrom ball and topspinner, and a mischievous character who often sported a new hair-do, Dane Piedt was dominant on South Africa's domestic scene but his international career never really took off.

His nine Tests were played over the span of five years and was bookended with milestones, one promising, the other much less so. Piedt played his first Test in Harare in 2014 and took the best figures by a South African spinner on debut since Aubrey Faulkner in 1906, and his last in India in 2019, when he conceded the most number of sixes by a bowler in a series (20). In between that, he captained his domestic franchise, the Cape Cobras and topped South Africa's first-class wicket-charts twice, in the 2013-14 season and the 2018-19 summer.

Piedt was less successful in shorter formats and although he was contracted for the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League (MSL), he did not play in its second season. Instead, he transitioned to commentary. Known for his eagerness to try different things, in March 2020, Piedt ended his South African career and signed up to play in a T20 competition in the USA.
