Colin Mitchell played 30 matches for Somerset between 1952 and 1954 as a right-arm fast-medium opening bowler. His only full season was in 1953 when in 24 matches he took 47 wickets at 36.08, including a career-best 6 for 62 against Worcestershire. His job as a teacher ended his first-class career, although he captained Brislington CC for 13 years and went on to become club president.

Mitchell was a talented footballer, representing the Army while on National Service and he was offered professional terms by Nottingham Forest but declined. As an amateur he made 1000 appearances for Clifton St Vincent in the Bristol Down's League. He was also a low-handicap golfer.
