Calum Haggett, an allrounder who bowls medium-fast and bats left-handed, is forging a county career despite a disturbing discovery early in his career when during a routine screening at Loughborough at the start of 2010, as a member of the England U-19 squad, an aortic root dilatation and a leaking heart valve were discovered, which required open-heart surgery. Without the benefit of such a routine check, he was told the consequences could have been fatal within a couple of years.

Haggett was born in Taunton, went to Millfield School and grew up playing for Bridgwater CC in the Western Premier League. He toured Bangladesh with England Under-19s in 2009.

Perhaps because of his operation, Haggett's career never took off with Somerset, his home county - his only appearances came in the Caribbean T20 at the start of 2011 - but he was given a second chance by Kent. His debut came against Cardiff MCCU at the start of the 2013 season and he maintained his place for the start of the County Championship. Kent's faith began to reap dividends in 2015 when he registered career-best displays with both bat and ball and he had further opportunities the following year
