Younis Khan has returned to Pakistan's ODI squad for the upcoming four-match series against England, starting November 11. Younis last played in the format during the 2015 World Cup, but had a tournament to forget, scoring just 43 runs from three matches, and was eventually dropped from the line-up.
Haris Sohail and Imad Wasim were both left out of the 16-man squad because of injuries, meaning that the uncapped left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar was drafted in as a replacement. Besides those changes, Pakistan opted for the same squad that won 2-1 in Zimbabwe last month.
Younis, 37, has been in fine form in Test cricket, scoring eight hundreds from his last 15 matches at an average of 68.68. However, his recent record in ODIs has been less impressive; he has managed just one century since 2008, against New Zealand last December.
Last year, after being dropped from the ODI squad for the home series against Australia, a hurt Younis lashed out at the PCB, challenging the board to build a team without him in the mix. Despite being out of favour in ODIs at the time, Younis eventually returned to the squad for the home series against New Zealand, and was also included in the team's World Cup squad.
"Keeping in view his current form, Younis Khan has been included in the squad to land stability to the middle-order batting," the chief selector Haroon Rashid said. "Now it is up to Younis to prove that he could meet the demands of the modern-day one-day cricket and play according to the team management's game plan."
Since being blanked 3-0 by Bangladesh in April, Pakistan have won each of their last three ODI series, against Zimbabwe (twice) and Sri Lanka.
Pakistan squad: Azhar Ali (captain), Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfraz Ahmed, Anwar Ali, Aamer Yamin, Yasir Shah, Zafar Gohar, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan, Rahat Ali, Bilal Asif
