Durham 65 for 3 trail Yorkshire 254 (Dawson 86, Lewis 4-77) by 189 runs
Scorecard
Richard Dawson led a Yorkshire fightback on the first day at Chester-le-Street, after Durham had continued their early season surge by reducing them to 179 for 9. The Durham seamers exploited some early movement in the pitch, as all Yorkshire's main batsmen succumbed, Mick Lewis taking the important wicket of Phil Jaques for 18. But Dawson and Deon Kruis, who does not have much of a pedigree as a batsman, added 75 for the last wicket. Kruis got off the mark first-ball with a six and added five fours in his 32-ball innings. Dawson was finally out for 86, agonisingly just one short of his previous first-class best, trapped lbw by Lewis to give him his fourth wicket of the innings. Yorkshire's recovery was then capped by a late surge of wickets. Tim Bresnan snapped up Mike Hussey with his first ball and added John Lewis in his next over. Kruis rounded off an impressive day with Paul Collingwood's wicket and Durham know they will have to show plenty of their new found steel to make it five wins out of five.
Worcestershire 17 for 0 trail Essex 220 (Irani 85, Mason 4-48) by 203 runs
Scorecard
Ronnie Irani played a captain's innings but did not receive much support from his team mates as Worcestershire claimed the opening honours. After being put into bat Essex were reduced to 69 for 4. James Foster added 55 with Irani and James Middlebrook struck 37 in a 63-run stand for sixth wicket, but Worcestershire's attack was always on top. Matt Mason claimed 4-48 - including Andy Flower - and was well supported by Gareth Batty and Kabir Ali. Irani tried his best to salvage the innings, striking 10 fours and two sixes in his 138-ball innings, before he was caught and bowled by Batty. Graeme Hick backed-up the bowlers by snaffling five catches at slip although Worcestershire still managed to grass five chances - including Irani on 28 - so their position could have been so much better.
Somerset 79 for 2 (Burns 45*) v Lancashire
Scorecard
Only 25.3 were possible at Taunton, with honours ending just about even after Lancashire had chosen to bowl first. James Anderson struck in the first over, trapping Matthew Wood lbw before John Francis and Michael Burns set about building a platform. Glen Chapple removed Francis, to an impressive caught and bowled, which brought Sanath Jayasuriya to the crease. A bizarre incident left Jayasuriya holding just his bat handle, after the blade completely snapped away. But he recovered his composure, and with Burns stroking nine boundaries in his 45 Somerset rallied. Andrew Flintoff bowled a tight first spell, conceding six runs from five overs.
