The Anguilla Cricket Development Committee held one of the most gala events
of the new millennium at the L.A. Café this past Tuesday evening. The event,
which was first thought up by ex-Hampshire County cricketer Mr. Cardigan
Connor and Mr. Benji Hughes, was held in appreciation of two of the most
talented West Indian cricketers of all time: Courtney A Walsh and Curtley
EL Ambrose. It was a most appreciative gesture by the A.C.D.C. for
two long serving heroes of the game. On this special evening, Walsh and
Ambrose were not considered Jamaican and Antiguan respectively but, rather,
West Indian.
The key address of the night was given by former West Indian captain and
cricketing legend, Viv Richards. Richards spoke of the wonderful and
long-lasting contribution both Walsh and Ambrose had made to the game over
the years and that such a ceremony was fitting for these two giants of the
game. Richards also reminisced on his years of captaincy and noted that
although both Walsh and Ambrose had immense natural ability from the start
that it was only through hard work and determination that they both realised
their full potential. He was also very complimentary of the brilliant
foresight of the A.C.D.C. and the Anguillian public for being the first to
host such an event for Walsh and Ambrose, who are both deserving of the
highest praise for their years of tireless service.
Leeward Islands Cricket Association President, Mr. E. Val Banks and
Minister of Sport Mr. Edison Baird also spoke of the stellar contributions
that these two had made to West Indian cricket and the West Indies as a
whole. Mr. Baird also touched on the idea that maybe one day, one such event
may be held in appreciation for one of Anguilla's cricketers.
The presentation of the awards, which were locally made by Cheddie's
Carving Studio, were done by Muriel Owen and Alkin Rogers who both made
congratulatory speeches to the troublesome duo. An auction of cricket
memorabilia, mainly signed bats and balls was also completed and all
proceeds went to both Walsh and Ambrose. After a brief question and answer
segment, Cardigan Connor gave a very meaningful vote of thanks and noted
that without the co-operation of the Anguillian public such a splendid event
was not possible. He highlighted the fact that he was extremely grateful for
having the opportunity to be involved in such an event and noted that it was
only fitting, for these wonderful men, including his personal friend, the
late Malcolm Marshall, contributed so much to his personal career.
It was a wonderful evening for two legends of the game and those who
attended should be eternally grateful for having such a magnificent
opportunity to show their appreciation for Courtney Walsh and Curtley
Ambrose.
