Having set an imposing target of 495, Rest of India skittled out Mumbai for just 204 to complete a comprehensive victory in the Irani Trophy at Mohali. With places in the Indian squad to play Australia at stake, the likes of Haryana's Joginder Sharma and Murali Kartik were on their game to ensure that Mumbai were routed.
Rest of India added 15 to their overnight 363 for 9 before Zaheer Khan, who smashed a 48-ball 60, was caught by Vinayak Mane off Robin Morris. Mumbai started their reply well enough, with Mane and Wasim Jaffer adding 40, but lost wickets thereafter at regular intervals. Jaffer went lbw to Shib Sankar Paul, and Mane followed for 41, caught at bat-pad off Kartik's bowling.
Vinod Kambli (36) and Ramesh Powar merely halted the inevitable as Joginder and Madhya Pradesh's Yogesh Golwalkar ran through the middle order. Sairaj Bahutule's defiant 39 restored an ounce of pride, but when Joginder knocked back Aavishkar Salvi's off stump, it was all over, the Rest of India home with more than three sessions to spare.
Joginder picked up 3 for 40, while Golwalkar finished up with figures of 2 for 24. The majority of the Rest of India team will now proceed to Bangalore to take part in the India Seniors-India A warm-up match, while a dispirited Mumbai must head back home. The Aussies await.
