Laurie Potter made the most of some familiar surrounds on the opening day of Staffordshire's Minor Counties match with Buckinghamshire at Cannock. Cannock allrounder Potter (75) and Stafford pro Graeme Archer (64) upped the tempo in a third wicket stand of 111 after Staffordshire had mustered only 38 for two off 19 overs in a laboured pre-tea session. Opener Jamie Jervis was in for 11 overs before being caught behind without scoring.
Potter and Archer, who scored his 64 off only 75 balls, picked up the momentum and Staffordshire collected two batting points before declaring 25 runs behind Buckinghamshire's 206 for six off 58.5 overs on 181 for four off 51. Potter had earlier taken three for 50 off 13.5 overs.
Meanwhile rain thwarted Cheshire and Cornwall's efforts at Truro. The weather delayed a start on day two until 1.30pm, and some friendly Cornish bowling allowed Cheshire to indulge themselves in racing to 182 for two off 34 overs. Paul Bryson (69 not out) and Darren Long (67 not out) both capitalised, with Alsager debutant Long smashing his 64 off only 43 balls, 60 of which came in boundaries.
It left Cornwall to chase 227 but the rain returned soon after 4pm and the game was abandoned with Cornwall on 28 for one off 9.2 overs.
