Middlesex are delighted to announce that Abdur Razzaq will be their overseas player for the 2002 and 2003 seasons.
Razzaq is a world-class all-rounder who has created a great impression since bursting on to the Test scene in 1999 against Australia. He made his One-Day International debut against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 1996, aged just 16. He has played in 14 Test matches and has taken 26 wickets as well as scoring a maiden Test century against England during the last winter tour. He has scored over 1,400 runs in internationals and taken 116 wickets at 24.56.
Commenting on the signing, Club Coach John Emburey said, "We were primarily looking for a strike bowler and Razzaq fits the bill perfectly. He is a magnificent addition to our squad and the club are very excited at obtaining his services for the next two years".
Razzaq was equally excited, "Once I knew of their interest, Middlesex was the only place I wanted to go. The prospect of playing at Lord's for such a county as Middlesex is a dream come true".
Middlesex also announced the signing of Sven Koenig from the start of the 2002 season. A left-handed opening bat who topped the South African first-class averages in 2000/01 at an average of 63.09. He qualifies under EU Regulations, as he is an Italian national.
John Emburey paid tribute to Stephen Fleming, the current overseas player for Middlesex. "Stephen has done a magnificent job for us and I am certain he will continue to do so until the end of the season. Due to international commitments, he is unable to return next year, but he has undoubtedly contributed to our improved form and team spirit.
"Both he and Justin Langer have been outstanding ambassadors and Middlesex have been truly fortunate to have these two great players over the past four seasons."
