NSW leg-spinner Stuart MacGill is poised to make his one-day international debut in front of his home crowd in Sydney this Friday, after being added to the Australian squad for the next two Carlton & United Series matches. MacGill, the leading wicket-taker in the Ashes series last summer, has been overlooked for international duty since the fourth Test against the West Indies in April, but joins the 13-man squad as a replacement for the injured Shane Warne.
Warne has been advised he will be sidelined for 2-4 weeks after tearing his side muscle while bowling during Australia's surprise 45-run loss to Pakistan at the Gabba in the opening match of the Carlton & United Series on Sunday. He completed his 10-over spell in the afternoon session claiming 2-52, but was forced to bat with a runner when he appeared later in the evening. MacGill performed with distinction for Australia A in the recent warm-up matches against Pakistan and is likely to be rushed into the side to play India at the spin-friendly SCG on January 14.
Australian squad: Steve Waugh (capt), Michael Bevan, Adam Dale, Damien Fleming, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Shane Lee, Stuart MacGill, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Mark Waugh.
