Jones goes back to his roots

Ditched from England's Test team and out of their World Cup plans, Geraint Jones is returning to his roots after agreeing to play the remainder of the Brisbane first-grade season with Beenleigh-Logan.

Jones, who was born in Papua New Guinea and lived in Queensland before moving to England, played youth cricket for Loganholme and first grade with Beenleigh-Logan. Jones' first outing will be this weekend when the Cutters play Northern Suburbs

"The opportunity was there for me to play some cricket here after the Ashes," Jones said, "so I'm pleased to be able to get some playing time with Beenleigh ahead of the coming summer with Kent.

"The club has got itself in a position to possibly win a trophy this season so hopefully I can help out. It's nice to be back where I started and good to catch up with some familiar faces."

Jones, who bagged a pair in the third Ashes Test at Perth before being dropped, will play as a batsman initially. The first-season wicketkeeper Daniel Payne is continuing in his role behind the stumps.
