Western Australia reached 6 for 132 against Victoria at stumps on the first day of their Pura Cup match at the Junction Oval. Murray Goodwin saved WA's blushes with an unbeaten 64 after they lost early wickets. Play had been curtailed as showers entirely washed out three hours, including the whole of the second session.

After losing the toss, Victoria dismissed three batsmen in the first hour, Mathew Inness snaring Marcus Noth and Chris Rodgers, while the dangeruous Mike Hussey fell for 24. When play resumed after rain, Shane Harwood, in his first four-day match this season, showed he didn't want to be outdone by Inness. He ruffed up Ryan Campbell and Beau Casson with vicious bumpers, a delivery that he's worked on with Rodney Hogg, Victoria's bowling coach. The tactic worked too: Campbell was hit on the helmet, and shortly after calling for a replacement, he edged hesitantly to third slip.

Although wickets fell around him and between showers, Goodwin held firm, and was watchful in defence. Paul Reiffel, the former Test bowler, made it back on the field. He was umpiring in his first Pura Cup match and gave Kade Harvey out to a contentious catch down the leg side.

To make up lost time play was extended to 7.15, and will start at 10.30 on on the second day.
