England v Pakistan

At The Oval, June 20

At The Oval, June 20. England won by seven wickets. Toss: Pakistan.
A hat-trick from Anderson and a brutal tour de force from Trescothick catapulted England to victory in just 22 overs. Pakistan lost Imran Nazir to the first ball of the match - one of four golden ducks in the innings - and slumped to 80 for six before Yousuf Youhana and Azhar Mahmood added a face-saving 72. At 185 for seven, Pakistan were just breathing, but Anderson then claimed England's first hat-trick in 373 one-day internationals. Abdul Razzaq drove to midoff, Shoaib Akhtar edged behind and Mohammad Sami was bowled middle and off by a yorker verging on a full toss. It was not just a statistic; it was the culmination of perhaps Anderson's most promising bowling performance yet. For Pakistan, the punishment was far from over. Trescothick needed 11 balls to get off the mark, but then, in a ferocious display of cover-driving and upper-cutting, left Pakistan for dead, to say nothing of his opening partner, Solanki. By the time he top-edged a pull in the 12th over, Trescothick had bludgeoned 86 off 55 balls - with 16 fours and two sixes - from a total of 109. Deprived of the strike, Solanki's share was a mere eight. Flintoff supplied a strongarm 26, leaving the patient Solanki unbeaten on 40 - and Pakistan's bowlers licking their wounds.
Man of the Match: M. E. Trescothick. Attendance: 18,104; receipts £586,491.
