After a delayed start at New Road, England, who won the toss, made an
appalling start, losing six wickets for 25 in 11 overs before lunch.
Openers Gary Pratt and Nicky Peng were undone by balls that lifted. Hampshire's Jimmy Adams and Glamorgan wicket-keeper Mark Wallace were caught behind while local boy Kadeer Ali was caught at slip for a duck.
The nadir came off the final ball before lunch when Ian Bell, the captain, was run out after David Harrison had called him for a single.
England made a controversial decision before the match, replacing Wallace as
captain with Bell. Bell had skippered the side for the three one-day
internationals and the first Test when Wallace, the appointed captain, was
injured. England won all four games and Bell led the side well whereas Wallace had a poor match at Northampton in the last Test, which Sri Lanka won by 151 runs.
