Canada qualifies for Under-19s World Cup

Team Canada has done it again. Our Under-19s Team by defeating Bermuda in a keenly contested game at Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City is going to the Under-19s World Cup in Bangladesh in 2004.

Canada batting first scored 271 runs off 47.5 overs. Mohamed Qawi top scored with 89 runs. Canada was without opening bowler Simon Upton because of a finger injury and was hard pressed to contain the impressive Bermuda youngsters.

Bermuda batting second scored 270 runs off 50 overs and could easily have won the game had they scored off the last ball of the game. It was not to be however. Bermuda would have joined Cayman Islands and Canada with one loss each, but would still have lost on run rate. Canada went undefeated in the event held in wonderful weather.

Four of the Bermuda team, coached by Mark Harper were 15 year olds and represent wonderful prospects for the future. Cayman Islands, coached by Theo Cuffy, finished second and also displayed fantastic talent including a stylish opening bowler, Troy Taylor, whose best figures were 7 wickets for 12 runs off 7 overs.

The United States of America team, also has shown some fantastic improvement in their players, while Argentina, severely hampered by playing in their winter or off-season, can be pleased with the fact that 10 of their 14 players will be eligible to play in the next U19 tournament as well.
