Somerset have ended speculation over who will lead them in 2004 by reappointing Michael Burns as their captain.
Under Burns' captaincy Somerset were relegated to the Championship's second division at the end of 2003, and he offered to stand aside if the committee had a preferred replacement. Surrey's Ian Ward was approached but he turned down the opportunity, opting to join Sussex instead, and so Burns retained the hot seat.
"I am more than honoured to accept the captaincy for a second year," Burns said. "I hope the harsh lessons learned in my first year can be carried forward into a successful next season."
Somerset have strengthened their squad with the signing of Ricky Ponting, but they have still to fill the gaps left by the move of Steffan Jones to Northants and the seemingly imminent departure of James Bryant.
