A convincing allround performance from Derbyshire furthered a miserable tour for West Indies A. There were a trio of half-centuries, and then Ant Botha took five wickets to add to his unbeaten 46 and consign West Indies to what was in the end a comfortable defeat by 30 runs.
At one stage West Indies were looking odds-on to chase down Derbyshire's mammoth 306, while Runako Morton was at the crease and blazing his way to 95. But spare a thought for poor old Morton. After getting out five shy of his hundred, he then watched as his team contrived to lose their last four wickets for 33 runs, and with it, the match.
Derbyshire hardly put a foot wrong after winning the toss. Their openers Steve Stubbings and Travis Birt put on 90 for the first wicket, and they both went on to their fifties. Stubbings then put on 64 with Gary Balance (48), and the momentum just continued to build from there. Although West Indies picked up wickets steadily, the intervals were of such length that they couldn't puncture the momentum and Derbyshire cruised along at six an over.
Morton and Devon Smith regrouped after the early loss of Lendl Simmons to Kevin Dean and put on 64 for the second wicket. Sylvester Joseph then joined Morton and they put on a further 51 runs together. This triggered a minor collapse, although Morton continued to glue the innings. But when he fell, with the score 236 for 6, West Indies's momentum fell away. Botha cleaned up.
