†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1986-87

At Sydney, February 6 (day/night)

15-Apr-1988
At Sydney, February 6 (day/night). Australia won by two wickets. To reach the finals, West Indies had not only to win but to score 374 to surpass England's run-rate. They failed on both counts as their batting again let them down. It was the first time they had not qualified for the finals in five World Series Cup tournaments. After Richards had won the toss, Payne batted 42 overs for 60, many of his runs made with Logie as a runner after he strained a hamstring muscle sprinting for a quick single. Gray was recalled by Border after rightly being given out by umpire McConnell for obstructing the field - deliberately blocking the ball with his bat at the non-striker's end to baulk a run-out chance - but ironically he was run out soon afterwards. Zoehrer gave Australia an excellent start as makeshift opener with 50 from 59 balls, but the scoring slowed once he was out and the result was in doubt until O'Donnell thrashed 23 from fifteen balls at the end.
Man of the Match: T. J. Zoehrer. Attendance: 32,537.
