†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1983-84

At Sydney, January 17 (day/night)

15-Apr-1985
At Sydney, January 17 (day/night). West Indies won by 28 runs. In a game sold out days in advance, West Indies had a comfortable win after Haynes, dropped at 56, had made an unbeaten 108. They had early difficulties against Lawson, Rackemann and Hogg before Haynes and Lloyd added 80 in 66 minutes. Ritchie and Wessels gave Australia a healthy start with 68 runs in 84 minutes, against an attack lacking Garner and Marshall, but the Australians failed to sustain the momentum. It was an unsatisfactory match. Australia were fined £400 for failing to bowl 50 overs in their allotted three and a half hours, and 70 arrests were made among drunken spectators. Cardboard drink-trays, used as missiles, were subsequently banned from the ground.
Man of the Match: D. L. Haynes. Attendance: 42,323.
