Bermuda stumble in chase of 373

Cricinfo staff

July 12, 2008

Bermuda 106 and 123 for 4 (Outerbridge 71*, Lyons 2-20) need a further 250 runs to beat Scotland 282 and 106 for 9 dec (Watts 83, McCallum 42*, O'Brien 3-39)
Scorecard

Scotland remained in the driver's seat for the second day in succession after enforcing a declaration, leaving the hosts Bermuda a challenging 373 to win going into the final day in Hamilton. Scotland strengthened their position with quick wickets, before an unbeaten 71 by Steven Outerbridge just managed to keep Bermuda afloat.

Scotland began the day with a lead of 259 and extended it to 301 before Craig Smith fell for 38. Smith's overnight partner, Fraser Watts, missed out on a century as he became medium-pacer Steven Kelly's second victim of the morning. The steady fall of wickets didn't affect Scotland's position in the match as the lead stretched beyond 350. Neil McCullum finished with an unbeaten 42 before Scotland declared with the fall of the ninth wicket on 196.

Bermuda suffered an early blow as Chris Foggo, their top scorer from the first innings, had to retire hurt on nought. The opening bowlers, Dewald Nel and Gordon Goudie kept the pressure by removing James Celestine and Oronde Bascome respectively to leave Bermuda at 20 for 2. Outerbridge and Oliver Pitcher revived Bermuda with a stand of 45 but a double-strike by the left-arm spinner Ross Lyons on the same score put Scotland back in command. Outerbridge and Rodney Trott added 58 and ensured Bermuda didn't lose any more wickets till stumps. With another 250 to get, Bermuda would need more such partnerships to fight it out and make amends for their first-innings collapse.
