Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1958/59

Captain: David Lewis

After two seasons of touring teams, Rhodesia's triumphs in the Currie Cup B section during 1955/56 were rather a distant memory, but the team held its own on its debut in the A Section. They were one of three teams finishing in joint second (or bottom!) position, in a season when outright results were hard to come by. Rhodesia did not lose a match outright, although bad light saved them in their home match against Natal. They only gained one victory, though, and lost four matches on first innings. Their win was a fine performance against Western Province in the final match.

Tony Pithey, the only batsman to reach three figures, topped the batting with 497 runs at an average of 55.22. Four other batsmen scored over 200 runs: Chris Duckworth (283 at 28.30), Percy Mansell (245 at 27.22), Colin Bland (239 at 26.44) and Rob Ullyett (215 at 23.88). Godfrey Lawrence was again the bowler of the season and was never mastered by the opposition, taking 24 wickets at an average of 17.16 and finishing top of the A Section averages among regular players. Three other bowlers took more than 10 wickets: Rob Ullyett 15 at 32.74, Joe Partridge 13 at 19.00 and Harold Paton, who otherwise had little success during his stay with Rhodesia since 1954/55, 11 at 13.90.

On the whole, the team relied on experienced players, but all-rounder Eddie Parker made his debut, playing in two matches.
