Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1955/56

Captain: David Lewis

Rhodesia had a superb Currie Cup season, winning all six B Section matches, four of them by an innings, a unique feat. The team played positive, confident cricket under the captaincy of David Lewis and totally outclassed the opposition. They duly won promotion to the A Section for the next Currie Cup season, which was not to be until 1958/59, as it transpired. This two-year gap, due to the English and Australian touring teams, was to be a severe handicap, as the confidence gained during this year of success tended to fade in the memory.

Percy Mansell, far from being exhausted after the 1955 tour of England, was in magnificent form and actually topped both the batting and bowling averages for the entire B Section. He scored 393 runs (average 65.50), including two centuries, but, at the age of 35, this was to be his last season of real success with the bat. Three other batsmen also averaged over 50: Marshall Davies (432 runs at 61.71), David Lewis (468 at 58.50) and Denis O'Connell-Jones (461 at 57.62). All scored two centuries.

There was a well-balanced bowling attack, with three bowlers averaging under 16. Foremost among these was Mansell, with 36 wickets at an average of 14.38. The pace attack of Godfrey Lawrence and Joe Partridge was beginning to establish itself. Lawrence, in his first full season, took 24 wickets at 15.08 each, while Partridge, in only three matches, took 14 wickets at 15.14. They were backed up by the medium-pace of Ron Coventry and Mike Slaven.

Chris Duckworth had toured England as a reserve wicket-keeper who could bat, but for Rhodesia the gloves were usually worn by Don Arnott, who made a fine impression as wicket-keeper in his first full season.

A two-day match was played against Natal at Salisbury Sports Club on 5 and 6 November. Rhodesia scored 405, to which Natal repied with 714/9, with centuries from Jackie McGlew, Johnny Watkins and Roy McLean.
