Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1947/48

Captain: 'Sandy' Singleton

Rhodesia again finished at the bottom of the Currie Cup log -- equal with two other provinces, if the percentage system is applied. This was despite the arrival of two notable newcomers: Syd Martin, the Worcestershire professional, and Hugh Tayfield, from Natal. There was a good victory over North-Eastern Transvaal, thanks largely to fine bowling from Johnny Leibbrandt, a medium-pacer newly up from Eastern Province. There were narrow defeats by Border and Western Province, both after Rhodesia had taken a first-innings lead.

The newcomers, together with Sandy Singleton who had played only one game the previous season, often dominated the cricket. Connie Pretorius, a local aggressive batsman in his first full season, topped the batting, with 328 runs at an average of 32.80. He was closely followed by Martin (326 at 32.60), while Singleton had a useful all-round season (222 runs at 24.66; 12 wickets at 12.33). Leibbrandt was the most economical bowler, with 19 wickets at 16.78, while Tayfield took 22 at 19.22.

This was Denis Tomlinson's final first-class season; he quietly faded out after four rather unsuccessful matches, as did Len Brown.
