Rhodesian first-class cricket in
1936/37
Captain:
'Jack'
Hayward
Visits had been
planned by Griqualand West the
previous season, and then by
Transvaal, but both were
cancelled, so Rhodesia's only
outing was a visit to
Johannesburg. Lack of regular
cricket was taking a heavy toll
of the Rhodesian team, for whom
another six players were making
their debuts. The only one with a
notable future was the
16-year-old Percy Mansell, who
was already doing wonders in
Bulawayo league cricket; his
brother Mervyn also
played.
The match itself
came close to being a complete
disaster. Pace bowler Jack
Charsley did most to dismiss
Transvaal for a moderate score,
but the batsmen came horribly
unstuck on a turf pitch, when
they had played virtually all
their previous cricket on
matting. Only the two survivors
from the team's previous visit to
Johannesburg, new captain Jack
Hayward and pace bowler Henry
Moll, lasted long; Moll joined
Hayward with the score a
horrendous 19/9, and they added
64 for the last wicket. But this
could not avoid the follow-on and
the innings defeat, and it would
be ten years before Rhodesia
would venture south again.
At Johannesburg; 16, 17, 18
December. TRANSVAAL 262 (A
Melville 70, T W T Baines 79, X C
Balaskas 36; J H Charsley 6/92).
RHODESIA 83 (C J R Hayward 37*; N
McAlpine 4/13, S C Parkyns 5/21)
and 106 (A J M Mansell 34; S C
Parkyns 3/16, J H M Pickerill
3/5, C H K Jones 3/23). Transvaal
won by an innings and 73 runs.
It is intended in the future to
produce the full scorecard, and
also much more information about
cricket in Rhodesia during this
season. At present, the next
entry in this section is for
1938/39
