Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1909/10

Captain: Leo Robinson

It was five years before Rhodesia played any further first-class cricket after their inaugural match in 1904/05; these were two friendly matches against H D G Leveson-Gower's English touring side.

It had been intended that the full English team which had just completed its tour of South Africa should visit the country, but in the end only six were able to do so, the most well-known being Leveson-Gower himself, Francis Fane and H D G Simpson-Hayward. The numbers were made up by several famous South African players, including Billy Zulch, Percy Sherwell and Reggie Schwarz.

Rhodesia still had her five major players of the earlier Currie Cup encounter, and also included Tom Bourdillon, later to play for Sussex, and Cambridge University graduate Herbert Keigwin. They were no match for such strong opposition in the first game but, after being forced to follow on in the Salisbury game, recovered well enough to declare, thanks to a fine century by Keigwin, the first for the country in first-class cricket. A bowler named Stephenson took five wickets in the first match, in his only first-class appearance, but so far research has been unable to uncover any further details about him.

At Queens Ground, Bulawayo; 22, 23, 24 March. RHODESIA 164 (W S Taberer 45, H S Keigwin 35; R O Schwarz 3/46, A E Cook 3/35) and 152 (W S Taberer 42; A E Cook 3/42, J W Zulch 3/28). LEVESON-GOWER'S XI 436/8 dec (J W Zulch 168, A E Cook 101, R O Schwarz 63, P W Sherwell 43*; F M Stephenson 5/104). Leveson-Gower's XI won by an innings and 120 runs.

At Salisbury Sports Club; 31 March, 1, 2 April. LEVESON-GOWER'S XI 379 (F L Fane 103, A E Cook 72, R O Schwarz 48, G H Simpson-Hayward 49, G W V Hopley 55; G Anderson 7/78) and 22/4 (C E Duff 4/11). RHODESIA 207 (L G Robinson 95, H S Keigwin 34; G H Simpson-Hayward 6/38) and 304/5 dec (F G Brooks 51, H S Keigwin 111, L G Robinson 57, W S Taberer 44*). Match drawn.

It is intended in the future to provide full scorecards and many further details about all cricket in Rhodesia during this season. At present, the next entry on this list is for 1922/23
