DID U KNOW...

Who is the only batsman to have scored three hundreds against England at Lord's?
(21 September 2001)

They called him the 'Colonel' and not without reason. He stood ramrod straight while playing each of his majestic drives through the off-side.

Dilip Balwant Vengsarkar was one of the finest batsmen of his times. Funnily for all his technical competence and natural ability, it was only the Ole Blighty among away countries that saw him at its glorious best. Vengsarkar made four hundreds in England - three of them in three consecutive Tests at Lord's (1979, 1982 and 1986) He also became the first and until now only batsman to accomplish the above feat at the 'Mecca of Cricket'.

No other non-English batsman has scored three hundreds at Lord's. West Indies legend George Headley was earlier the most successful foreign batsman at the ground - having scored two hundreds in his two visits in 1933 and 1939.

Vengsarkar returned to Lord's for a fourth time in 1990, when his best days were well behind him. But despite that he made 52 and 35 in his last two innings at the ground. His last visit to the ground in June 2000, saw him honoured along with nine other top performers as part of the 100th Test celebration at Lord's. Not bad for a cricketer who was dismissed for a duck in his first knock at the 'Mecca of Cricket'.
