DID U KNOW...

Who was the first batsman to given out by a third umpire in a one-dayer? (05 October 2001)

It happened about a month after Sachin Tendulkar had become the first man to be given out by a third umpire. Karl Liebenberg had sent Tendulkar on his way on November 14, 1992, the second day of the first Test on South African soil in 20 years.

It was again in South Africa then that the third umpire claimed his first scalp in the shorter version of the game. December 7 saw India and South Africa clash in what was the first official one-dayer in the Rainbow nation. After electing to bat, India put on 184. South Africa were 168 for two and on course for an easy win when history slipped in. South African captain Kepler Wessels on 43 reached for the danger end as Ajay Jadeja hit the stumps. Enter Rudi Koertzen, the third umpire for the match. He had a look at the replays before making his tryst with history...

This was also the first one-dayer in which a third umpire was used. The Television umpire has since become a permanent fixture in international matches around the world.
