Who is the only batsman to make 150 plus in an ODI and not win the Man of the Match? (20 July 2001)

You'd expect any batsman who scores above 150 in an ODI to be the automatic choice for Man of the Match. There have been 24 separate instances of 150 plus knocks in the limited overs game and on 23 occasions, the batsman concerned did indeed win the Man of the Match award. The remarkable exception occurred at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad on November 8, 1999 when India took on New Zealand. Indian skipper Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and chose to take first strike but lost his opening partner Sourav Ganguly in the second over.

From then on, it was the Tendulkar and Dravid roadshow all the way. Tendulkar was his usual imperious self, slamming an unbeaten 186 in just 150 balls. It was the highest individual score by an Indian in the shorter version of the game, breaking Ganguly's record of less than six months. The pair plundered 331 for the second wicket, a record partnership for any wicket in ODIs. When the innings drew to a close, India had raced to a phenomenal 376/2. Dravid was overshadowed by his partner in the outrage but not overly so. He was caught by Stephen Fleming off Chris Cairns in the 48th over by which time he had quietly accumulated 153 of his own at precisely run-a-ball. India proceeded to wrap up a thumping 174-run victory but Dravid was understandably not in the running for the MoM. Incredibly, only one of his seven ODI centuries has procured an award, against New Zealand at Taupo in 1999.
