Who has hit most sixes in an ODI career (18 July 2001)

The first six in ODIs was struck by Australian Ian Chappell during the inaugural limited overs encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 5, 1971. Since that fateful moment, sixes have flowed fast and furious with several batsmen collecting a reputation for giving the ball an almighty whack. Five men have climbed the summit of 100 sixes in their ODI careers.

Pakistani swashbuckler Shahid Afridi has exactly one hundred to his name, eleven of those coming in his maiden ODI innings against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996. Afridi couldn't stick to such a blistering pace but with 100 sixes in 127 innings, he continues to be one of the most frequent six hitters in the game. His Pakistani teammate Wasim Akram has 110 in his account. For a batsman who averages slightly over 16, it's a remarkable figure. India's little champion Sachin Tendulkar is third in the roster with 124, just one behind the peerless Viv Richards. But on top of the pile is the man from Matara, Sanath Jayasuriya who's sent 143 deliveries disappearing over the pickets during a 11-year-old career spanning 228 innings. Like Afridi, eleven came in the course of a single knock against Pakistan at Singapore in 1996, including four in an Aamir Sohail over, a performance he duplicated against New Zealand's Chris Harris in Sharjah earlier this year.
