India name full-strength squad for Champions Trophy

India on Monday decided to send its best team to the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI president, made the announcement after the ICC and member boards representing all the other Test-playing nations assured him that all his demands would be met.

The 14-man squad led by Sourav Ganguly contains all the marquee names of Indian cricket. Rahul Dravid, who had a splendid tour of England, has been retained as the vice-captain. The only new face in the squad is hard-hitting batting all-rounder Jai Prakash Yadav. Yadav had recently toured the Emerald Isles with the India ‘A’ side and his good showing in the one-dayers against the Sri Lanka ‘A’ side possibly clinched him a berth ahead of the likes of Sanjay Bangar and Sunil Joshi.

Squad: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, VVS Laxman, JP Yadav.

Ganguly: I hope the bowlers will learn from this tour

It was a happy Sourav Ganguly, who stepped on the podium, after a rainy final day at the Oval ensured that the final Test as well as the series was drawn. The Indian captain, in his post-match interview to Channel Four, expressed his satisfaction at the way his team rallied after being beaten in the first Test at Lord's.

"We did not play well at Lord's, but we knew there were three Tests to go and that we were a good side and I was happy with the way we played after that," Ganguly observed.

"I thought we batted pretty well this series. Maybe we could have seen a bit better from the bowlers, but they have not got a lot of experience behind them and I hope they will learn from this tour. We won the Test series in India, drew the one-day series in India, won the one-day series here and drew the Test series here so I think that will sum up who was the best side," the Indian captain added.

The other men to make it to the podium were Rahul Dravid, who was named Man of the Match for his memorable 217, and Michael Vaughan, who shared the Man of the Series award with Dravid.

For all the runs that Vaughan scored in the series, he, however, nominated his dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar at Trent Bridge as the moment he most cherished. "Probably getting Sachin [Tendulkar] out [at Trent Bridge] to be honest," Vaughan said. "The runs are obviously delightful, but with my dribble of off-spin, to get a world-class batsman out like Sachin was pretty special.”

I'm proud of Sachin, says Brian Lara

Caribbean batting legend Brian Lara paid tribute to Sachin Tendulkar on Monday, claiming he was "proud" of the Indian icon's achievements. “It's a great achievement for a 29-year-old to play 100 Tests," Lara observed. "The form and consistency that he has shown over his career is tremendous."

"He has the world at his feet and he's taking it one step at a time. He'll play a lot more and I am proud for him as a friend - I hope he goes on to even greater things." But despite his admiration for his friend and rival, Lara clarified that he was happy being his own man. "I look at Sachin and I see a great player, the kind of person that you would like to follow, but I have my reputation and am happy with the way my career has gone," he said.

This day in 1911 witnessed the birth of Lala Amarnath who later went on to become India's first Test centurion. Indian cricket's original stormy petrel also captained India in 15 of the 24 Tests that he played. His sons, Mohinder and Surinder Amarnath, were also Test cricketers with Surinder going on to emulate his father's feat of scoring a hundred on Test debut.

After all the unnecessary pre-tournament controversy, it is time at last for the cricket to begin. Among the teams hoping to get their names etched on the trophy are India, Pakistan, Australia and hosts Sri Lanka. Will either of them make it past the last hurdle?
