Powell-ful innings: Newcomer's 32 helps spur WI win

Edgbaston, England - Young Jamaican all-rounder Ricardo Powell made a good show with a quickfire innings in his first innings for West Indies who defeated Warwickshire in a World Cup warm-up match yesterday.

West Indies shrugged off two rain interruptions and the absence of injured skipper Brian Lara and their top pacemen to win by 34 runs.

The two-time world champions were happy to get in some extended play after their first scheduled match against Gloucestershire was abandoned on Sunday after 16.3 overs.

They made 228 for four off 47 overs. Warwickshire, set a revised target of 245 under the Duckworth/Lewis scoring system,were shot out for 210 in the 45th over.

Lara is nursing a wrist injury while pace spearheads Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose were rested.

The English press has been pestering Lara about the nature of his injury ``ask the doctors,'' he said in exasperation at the weekend.

The top five West Indies batsmen all made runs with the highest score of 50 coming from wicket-keeper Ridley Jacobs, who featured in an opening stand of 77 with Stuart Williams (35).

Powell provided the late impetus hitting three fours in a breezy 32 off just 27 balls while Shivnarine Chanderpaul worked the ball into the gaps for 49 not out from 52 balls with three fours and a six. Acting captain Jimmy Adams contributed a solid 39 off 61 balls.

Warwickshire, set a revised target of 245 to win, were all out for 210 with fast bowler Reon King taking three wickets for 34 runs off his 10 overs.

Keith Arthurton and Phil Simmons took two wickets each for 34 and 55 runs respectively.

The West Indies, who take on Pakistan in the World Cup at Bristol on Sunday, meet Surrey in their last practice match at the Oval tomorrow.
