Lara-Less West Indies defeat Warwickshire

Fans heading to Edgbaston yesterday to see Brian Lara bat against his old county Warwickshire would have been disappointed as he rested from the West Indies' second warmup game. Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose were also missing from the side that won by 37 runs yesterday.

Sent in to bat by Neil Smith (a member of England's 1996 World Cup squad), the Windies scored 228 for 4 in 47 overs in an innings twice interrupted by rain. Ridley Jacobs was dropped twice before top scoring with 50. Shivnarine Chanderpaul made an unbeaten 49, while captain Jimmy Adams (39), Stuart Williams (35) and Ricardo Powell (32*) all made thirties.

The first innings interruptions meant that Warwickshire's target was bumped up to 245. Mark Wagh (66) and Giles Welch (41) were the only Warwickshire batsmen to make respectable totals as the county side was dismissed for 210 after 44.4 overs. Reon King took 3/34 from his ten overs, Simmons and Arthurton claiming two wickets and Hendy Bryan one.

Dougie Brown bowled five overs for 0/21 before scoring five runs yesterday. Brown would surely have been in Scotland's World Cup squad if he hadn't been chosen for, and then dumped by, England over the past eighteen months.

The West Indies finish their warmup program at The Oval against Surrey on Wednesday.
