Vaas difference at Leicester

Maybe a 25-over slog is not the best way to assess form, but Sri Lanka dominated their shortened match against Leicestershire at Grace Road yesterday. Chasing 144 to win, the county side was dismissed for 95 to lose by 48 runs. While the defending world champions are better known for the strength of their spin attack, it was the pace trio of Vaas, Upashantha and Hathurusingha who took control yesterday.

Morning rain prevented a start until just before 3pm, set for the minimum length of 25 overs a side. Sri Lanka, led by Aravinda de Silva with Ranatunga resting, chose to bat first. They scored 143 for 5. Jayasuriya hit 36 from 28 balls before de Silva scored an unbeaten 54 from 65 deliveries.

Former England one-day batsman Darren Maddy was out lbw on the first ball of the Leicestershire innings, Chaminda Vaas' first of his four wickets. The Sri Lankan left-hander's four-over spell was worth 4/14, and Leicestershire were all out before he was needed again. Eric Upashantha and Chandika Hathurusingha took two wickets each, and Upul Chandana one, the other being a run out. Muralitharan had the day off. Leicestershire lost their last six wickets for eighteen runs.
