McMillan on song

New Zealand (223-3) bt Sussex (219-5) by 7 wkts

An imposing 95 from Craig McMillan, well supported by Stephen Fleming and Roger Twose, saw New Zealand to victory over Sussex as they completed a hat-trick of emphatic wins in their warm-up games.

The New Zealand target of 220 did not look straightforward on a low, slow pitch, particularly after Matt Horne nicked James Kirtley to the wicketkeeper in the third over, but McMillan played quite beautifully.

Drives through and over the covers, straight hits and well-timed cuts peppered his innings. He reached 50 off only 38 balls, then slowed a little, and had hit 10 fours and a six when he was bowled round his legs.

Twose, less at ease, was at last looking set when Giles Haywood moved one in to bowl him. Fleming then played an elegant cameo, striking eight boundaries.

Earlier, Sussex, put in, edged their way to six runs off the first eight overs but, after Michael Di Venuto had fine-edged Geoff Allott, New Zealand's best bowler, Chris Adams played an innings of high quality.

Scratchy at first, Adams drove with great power through the offside, hitting eight fours and a six. Supported by Richard Montgomerie and Robin Martin-Jenkins, he ensured a respectable total but the New Zealanders passed it with 10 overs to spare.
