Mac Attack at the Oval

In the only World Cup warmup game on Monday to be unhindered by the weather, New Zealand's twenty-two year-old middle-order batsman McMillan played perhaps the most brutal knock of the warmup program so far, smashing 86 from 54 balls as the Black Caps defeated the Surrey Lions by 108 runs.

Coming to bat in the first over of the match after Matthew Horne had made a second-ball duck, McMillan dominated a Surrey attack from which Alex Tudor and Martin Bicknell had been rested. Often playing his now-customary straight hit, McMillan scored ten fours and four sixes before miscuing a reverse sweep to be Ian Salisbury's only victim of the day.

McMillan's 86 came in a second wicket stand of 133 with Nathan Astle, who went on to make 58. Adam Parore made an unbeaten 66 as New Zealand plundered 328 runs off their fifty overs for the loss of six wickets.

It was a tough day for the Surrey bowlers, new-ball partners Joey Benjamin (10-0-73-1) and Michael Bell (9-0-78-1) being savaged, while Ben Hollioake (8-1-51-1) made a good recovery after McMillan smashed him for 33 in his first two overs.

With Surrey scoring at a run-rate a good two-an-over less than they needed, only Alistair Brown (38) and Darren Bicknell (55) made any reasonable start. Roger Twose took 4/30 in less than six overs before Surrey were dismissed for 220 on the second-last available ball of the day.

New Zealand, with two impressive victories under their belt, take on Sussex in their last warmup on Wednesday.
