Yorkshire v India at Harrogate Paul McGregor - 9 May 1999 Today's World Cup warm up match scheduled between Yorkhire and India was abandoned without a ball bowled. Heavy overnight rain had apparently seeped under inadequate covering to produce a wet patch half way down the wicket. This was said to have made play dangerous. A good crowd had gathered and the news of the abandonment was met with boos and jeers and a small demonstration. Apparently the problem of a wet wicket was known to the club yesterday but nothing was seen to be done to dry things up. Overnight rain made the situation worse. Inadequate covering at Yorkshire out grounds will not help the case for having more cricket outside of Leeds. Last year at Scarborough play was lost when a water hog was not in working order and the ground staff blamed the Headingley staff for sending broken equipment to them. In world cup year the game is of course trying to attract spectators to watch cricket not to treat them to nothing more than a farce.
