Knight worries as England rolls Hampshire

It was an early afternoon for England at Southampton yesterday, their match against Hampshire lasting the sum total of 58.4 overs before a crushing nine-wicket victory was enacted. But while the bowlers all got a solid workout, the form of Nick Knight must be causing concern, out for a secondball duck. The calls are growing for Nasser Hussain to take his place for the World Cup opener against Sri Lanka on Friday.

Hampshire, sent in to bat by Alec Stewart, were all out for 91 in 38.4 overs. Adrian Aymes was top score with 23. Alan Mullally bowled well for his 4/20, while Ian Austin (2/8 from 8 overs) continued to show why he should not be underestimated. Mark Ealham completed a good week by claiming 2/12 from his six overs, Darren Gough and Andy Flintoff taking one each.

Knight's duck was all the more unimpressive by the manner of his dismissal, waving the bat outside off. Nick nicked the ball to keeper Aymes. Graeme Hick plundered the Hampshire attack, which was minus Nixon McLean for the day. Hick was unbeaten on 65 from 66 deliveries, thereby scoring more than two-third of the runs in England's brief run-chase. Alec Stewart's 54-ball 20 not out is his best score of the warmups.
