Kenya v Sri Lanka Preview, 30 May 1999

Rick Eyre

Zimbabwe's win over South Africa yesterday has taken a lot of the thunder out of this game. What looked like being a must-win but surely-win match for Sri Lanka is now a who-cares game that may provide an unexpected opening for the Kenyans.

This has been a sad tournament for the 1996 champions ending a decline that began with the Sharjah tournament last November. Reputations are there to play for, but it would be no surprise if this is the farewell appearance of two of the greats of Sri Lankan, indeed world, cricket - Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna Ranatunga. For that reason alone, this is a game to watch - just in case it's time to say goodbye.

Kenya's batting had been much anticipated before this series began, although Maurice Odumbe has failed to live up to expectations thus far. Not too much can be said of the bowling, although statistically they did better against India than did the Sri Lankans. Thomas Odoyo would look good with a county contract in his hand.

Prediction: Kenya have more to gain from this game now, namely a world reputation. I'll stick my neck out and say they'll do it.

Head-to-Head Statistics:

ODI matches played: 2 (in Kenya 1, in Sri Lanka 1)
Sri Lanka won 2, Kenya won nil.
