New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Bloemfontein, 10 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0800 GMT (10:00 local)

welcome to CricInfo.com's coverage of the 3rd match of the ICC
Cricket World Cup 2003 between New Zealand and Sri Lanka from Pool
        B at Bloemfontein
this is a crucial match for both teams, even before the still-
unresolved situation over New Zealand's possible forfeited match
against Kenya cropped up, with only three of the "big four" teams
in this group able to advance to the Super Six stage
it takes on even more importance for New Zealand now, as they may
effectively be starting the tournament four points behind the
eight-ball, needing to beat two of the other top contenders in
their group, rather than just one, to go any further
it's a lovely day in Bloemfontein, perfect for cricket playing and
watching today, though the crowd is only of modest size early on
the pitch is a batsman's paradise, very little grass covering,
maybe not the fastest deck around, but should be rather true,
might get a little slower later
New Zealand have won the toss and chosen to bowl first, however,
keen to follow on from their dominant series with the ball against
India at home, by putting pressure on the opposition batsmen early
        with their all-seam attack
Daniel Vettori is New Zealand's 12th man, with the seam troupe of
Shane Bond, Daryl Tuffey, Andre Adams and Jacob Oram to operate in
a pack, with support from the likes of Chris Harris, Scott Styris
and possibly Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan if need be
Sri Lanka have a pretty settled line-up, going in with seven
batsmen and four bowlers, with Kumar Sangakkara taking the gloves
whilst batting in the top order
Sri Lanka, naturally, have picked a specialist spin bowler unlike
New Zealand, as you'd expect even on the most pace bowler-friendly
deck, given that player just happens to be none other than Muttiah
        Muralitharan
interestingly, New Zealand have never won an ODI on South African
soil in 12 previous attempts, against any opponent, so they have a
big hoodoo to break if they are to go any further here
these sides have met at this ground once more, but it was a no
result, after Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 140 out of a total of
288/4 for Sri Lanka, while New Zealand were 66/1 in the 15th over
        when it was curtailed
the umpires, Steve Bucknor of the West Indies, and Neil Mallender
from England make their way out to the middle
followed by the New Zealand team, of which 6 are making their World
Cup debuts today - only Stephen Fleming (2), Nathan Astle (2),
Chris Cairns (3), Chris Harris (3) and Craig McMillan (1) having
        appeared in previous tournaments
Sri Lanka have more experience in this regards, just Russel Arnold,
Dilhara Fernando, Pulasthi Gunaratne and Kumar Sangakkara playing
their first World Cup matches today
it'll be Marvan Atapattu to take first strike to Daryl Tuffey from
the Willows End, with Sanath Jayasuriya at the non-striker's end
0.1 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, full and widish outisde off stump, a
little away swing, leaves well alone through to the keeper
0.2 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, good length shortish ball, seaming back
in to Atapattu, squares him up in defence, deflects away square on
the off side from the pad
0.3 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, fuller ball just outside off stump,
happily leaves it alone through to the keeper
0.4 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, shortish lifting ball just outside off
stump, stands tall on the crease to defend down into the off side
0.5 Tuffey to Atapattu, two runs, Tuffey strays down the leg side,
Atapattu glances it neatly fine to get himself and Sri Lanka
underway, good quick running puts pressure on the fine leg fielder
coming around, he fumbles and they sprint back for a second
0.6 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
gets right in behind it, standing tall on the crease to dead bat
defend down in close on the off side

End of over 1 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
DR Tuffey 1-0-2-0 - Willows End
ST Jayasuriya 0* (0b) MS Atapattu 2* (6b)

it'll be Shane Bond to open the bowling from the Loch Logan End
1.1 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
squared around in defence, easily defending down in close on the
off side, Atapattu briefly looks for a cheeky run before
Jayasuriya yells otherwise in no uncertain terms
1.2 Bond to Jayasuriya, one run, good length rising ball seaming across
the left-hander, gets a thick outside edge, but flies wide of
third slip, down to third man, off the mark in none-too-convincing
        fashion
1.3 Bond to Atapattu, no run, oooh! good length rising ball cutting
back from just outside off stump, through the gate of Atapattu,
cuts him in half as he jumps up to defend, a little noise as it
goes through to keeper Vincent, unconvincing appeal for a catch,
        umpire Bucknor says
not out very smartly, sounded more like brushing the shirt rather
        than inside edge
1.4 Bond to Atapattu, no run, good ball! quick, rising and seaming back
in sharply from outside off stump, Atapattu very uncomfortably
cops it on the body trying to fend it down
1.5 Bond to Atapattu, no run, slightly fuller ball just outside off
stump, Atapattu jumps across in behind it, defending it straight
down into the deck at his feet
1.6 Bond to Atapattu, no run, another fine delivery to finish the over,
quick, fuller and swinging in dramatically, Atapattu is trapped
creasebound, rapped on the pads and the bowler implores umpire
Bucknor to raise his finger, but a wise old shake of the head
        denies him

End of over 2 (1 run) Sri Lanka 3/0 (RR: 1.50)
SE Bond 1-0-1-0 - Loch Logan End
ST Jayasuriya 1* (2b) MS Atapattu 2* (10b)

the ball was just doing too much, definitely heading down the leg
        side
2.1 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, one run, shortish lifting ball which
straightens just outside off stump, Jayasuriya awkwardly jabs it
down just forward of square leg in defence, well called through
        for a quick run
2.2 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, good length ball angling into the legs,
Atapattu is surprisingly hurried up by the delivery, it just
straightened enough to make an attempted glance much harder, ends
up stumbling on the crease as he's taken high on the pad
2.3 Tuffey to Atapattu, two runs, a bit too full and a bit too
straight, neatly clipped off the legs through midwicket, plenty of
space there and it requires Cairns to chase it down from inside
the circle, one of only two men on the leg side
2.4 Tuffey to Atapattu, (noball) legbye: one run, oversteps, shortish
ball straying down the leg side, deflects away off the hip towards
        fine leg
2.4 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, three runs, shot! overpitched outside off
stump, just leans into it, firmly driving straight down the ground
on the off side, very easily played, Cairns with another chase,
this time from wide mid off
2.5 Tuffey to Atapattu, one run, fullish ball swinging in to the pads,
drops away towards midwicket, quick run taken again
2.6 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, three runs, Tuffey struggles with his line
now, this time straying to leg for the left-hander, clipped away
through forward square leg, long chase for McMillan, just manages
to scoop it back inside the rope to fellow chaser

End of over 3 (12 runs) Sri Lanka 15/0 (RR: 5.00)
DR Tuffey 2-0-14-0 (1nb) - Willows End
ST Jayasuriya 8* (5b) MS Atapattu 5* (14b)

3.1 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish, straight ball on middle and
leg, tucks it down just forward of square on the leg side, but
smart fielding there prevents thoughts of a quick single
3.2 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, short lifting ball seaming across the
left-hander to off stump, pokes it away down to backward point in
        defence
3.3 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish, straighter ball, worked away
straight to the one man posted at midwicket
3.4 Bond to Jayasuriya, four runs, oh dear oh dear! shortish lifting
ball seaming to off stump, pokes it down towards backward point,
Harris dives across, partially stopping it, Atapattu sets off for
a run but is sent back, Cairns picks up from the rebound, shies to
        the bowler's end
but misses, there's no-one backing up and they get three bonus
        overthrows as a result
3.5 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, digs it in shorter, much quicker, on
off stump, jumps on the crease to defend it down in close on the
        off side
3.6 Bond to Jayasuriya, (noball) no run, oversteps, shortish ball on
off stump, defends down into the covers from the crease
3.6 Bond to Jayasuriya, one run, good running! fullish, straight ball,
tucks it down in close on the leg side, into a slight gap thanks
to the packed off side field, very early call gets them through
for what turns out to be a comfortable quick single

End of over 4 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 21/0 (RR: 5.25)
SE Bond 2-0-7-0 (1nb) - Loch Logan End
ST Jayasuriya 13* (12b 1x4) MS Atapattu 5* (14b)

4.1 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, fullish, straight ball on off stump,
leans well forward, solidly defending up towards mid on
4.2 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish, straight ball, hops across
the crease, tucks it down towards forward square leg in defence
4.3 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, good shortish ball just outside off
stump, jabs it down in close on the leg side in defence, not
overly comfortable with the bounce on that one, maybe just a
little slower than expected on this occasion
4.4 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, one run, shortish, straight ball on off
stump, tucks it down through square leg, more in defence, but it
runs away wide of Styris at midwicket for an easy single
4.5 Tuffey to Atapattu, no run, good length ball just coming back in
slightly from outside off stump, traps Atapattu on the crease as
he comes across to it, taken high on the pad, loud shout for lbw
but umpire Mallender says not out, looks too high
4.6 Tuffey to Atapattu, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked away
down through square leg for an easy run, Adams does well to get in
from long leg quickly to prevent a second

5.1 Bond to Atapattu, OUT: what a catch! New Zealand get the early
breakthrough they desperately wanted, Atapattu wristily flicks a
shortish rising ball angling into the body, in the air just a
fraction behind square, but Styris dives to his right and snaps up
        a fine

       Hashan Tillakaratne the new batsman
5.2 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, shortish lifting ball just outside
off stump, hops on the crease, watchfully defending down into the
        covers
5.3 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, shortish ball angling away outside
off stump, raises the arms up high to leave it alone to the keeper
5.4 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, digs in a very short ball just
outside off stump, Tillakaratne is content to sway right back out
of the way of it, through to keeper Vincent, umpire Bucknor
signals that's his one allowed bouncer for the over
5.5 Bond to Tillakaratne, legbye: FOUR, poor ball, very full and down
the leg side, glanced very fine off the pad, just wide of the
diving Vincent and races down to the fine boundary
5.6 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, oooh! Bond gets the attempted yorker
a little bit better on line this time, but not quite good enough,
it's just outside off stump, Tillakaratne is beaten by it pushing
half forward in defence, through to the keeper

ST Jayasuriya 14* (16b 1x4) HP Tillakaratne 0* (5b)

6.1 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, FOUR, shot! shortish ball just outside off
stump, plays a short arm jab, just forcing it down through the
covers, all timing and it teasing the chasing Harris all the way
        to the rope
6.2 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, oh boy oh boy! big let off for
Jayasuriya, good length ball rising just outside off stump, the
batsman plays a nothing shot at it, fishing at it away from his
body in no man's land, a clear noise, through to the keeper, a
        huge appeal, but umpire
       Mallender says not out
6.3 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish lifting ball on off stump,
solidly defends down into the covers
6.4 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, fullish ball swinging into the pads,
Jayasuriya in a bit of a tangle as he misplays down the wrong
line, appeal for lbw but it pitched outside leg stump
6.5 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, good shortish lifting ball just
outside off stump, again has the batsman in a less than
comfortable state, fending it down in close on the off side
6.6 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, no run, shortish ball angling away outside
off stump, leaves well alone through to the keeper

7.1 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, fullish ball swinging across the
left-hander to off stump, squares right around on the crease to
defend watchfully back down the pitch
7.2 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, fullish, straight ball, shuffles
across the crease, turns it down to midwicket in defence
7.3 Bond to Tillakaratne, no run, good length ball angling across the
left-hander and seaming away outside off stump quite dramatically,
Tillakaratne shapes to defend before holding the bat inside the
line at the last moment to leave to the keeper
7.4 Bond to Tillakaratne, one run, shortish, straight ball, tucked off
the hip down through backward square leg, easy run taken to get
off the mark as Tuffey comes in from long leg to field
7.5 Bond to Jayasuriya, wide: no run, poor ball, shortish and straying
down the leg side, Jayasuriya tries to tickle it fine but misses
        out, through to the keeper
7.5 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, short rising ball on off stump, defends
straight down into the covers where Harris fields
7.6 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, superb fielding! the spritely 33-year-
old Chris Harris dives across acrobatically to his right to pluck
the flying ball out of the air from the bounce, as Jayasuriya
whacked a shortish ball powerfully square, but gets no value for
        it

HP Tillakaratne 1* (9b) ST Jayasuriya 18* (24b 2x4)

8.1 Tuffey to Tillakaratne, two runs, poor ball, short and wide outside
off stump, Tillkaratne reaches for it, strongly cutting into the
ground, away through backward point, doesn't quite get enough on
to it as Adams gets around to field from third man in the deep
8.2 Tuffey to Tillakaratne, two runs, better length outside off stump,
fullish and drawing the batsman forward, but Tillakaratne does
pretty well, square driving through a similar region, Adams again
has to scoot around, picking up and firing back on the run, but
        can't stop a quick two
8.3 Tuffey to Tillakaratne, one run, shortish, straight ball, turned
off the legs down to Bond at long leg
8.4 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, FOUR, terrible ball and the expected outcome
results with Jayasuriya on strike, bread and butter for the
powerful left-hander, short and wide outside off stump, smashed
down through the covers, no need to run for that one thank you
        very much
8.5 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Tuffey losing the plot now, overpitches
and wide outside off stump, right in Jayasuriya's strike zone, and
is deservedly smashed over extra cover
8.6 Tuffey to Jayasuriya, three runs, this time Tuffey strays to leg
stump, shortish ball and is glanced rather fine, Bond has a long
way to get around from much squarer at long leg, just manages to
tip it back inside the rope in time

16 runs from the last over, is likely to be Tuffey's last of this
spell, having rather contrasting fortunes to his opening partner
Bond, will be rather despondant after the caught behind off
        Jayasuriya was turned down
9.1 Bond to Jayasuriya, FOUR, Bond decides to even up the ledger with a
poor ball of his own, short and enough width outside off stump for
Jayasuriya to pound it down through point, bisection the field to
perfection, he's already making New Zealand pay with his second
        life
9.2 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, better length ball seaming back across
to off stump, squared right around in defence, solidly playing it
with a straight bat straight back to the bowler

stump, stands very tall on the crease to steer it down into the
        gully in defence
9.5 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, digs in a quick, short rising straight
ball, Jayasuriya awkwardly fends it straight down at his feet,
        good attacking delivery
9.6 Bond to Jayasuriya, no run, another quicker, shortish, straight
ball, jabs it down just forward of square on the leg side, quickly
fielded by midwicket to prevent a sharp single

cuts hard into the ground, straight to Harris at point
10.6 Oram to Tillakaratne, two runs, nice shot! short and a bit wide
outside off stump, powerfully back cuts through backward point,
very well struck and timed, Adams only just gets around in time
from third man to field, firing it back in to relay thrower Harris
        to prevent a third

back cuts well through backward point, a fair bit of work for

45.2 Oram to Arnold, two runs, short ball outside off stump, powerfully

squarer and Bond has to slide around from deep cover to field just
        inside the rope
45.3 Oram to Arnold, one run, fullish ball outside off stump, firmly
pushes it up towards Tuffey at mid off, good quick single taken
with the shot as the fielder runs forward, gently underarming at
the stumps, hitting but Arnold was always well home

dead straight full toss, just manages to slice a thick outside
edge to short third man, running with the shot
49.2 Bond to Tillakaratne, one run, excellent, tight, fullish, straight

Bond then tries to flick it back on to the stumps with
Muralitharan out of his crease, but misses, they scamper a quick
single as it rolls up to mid

49.3 Bond to Muralitharan, one run, again backs outside leg to a dead
straight, very full ball, tries to swing across the line, drags a

49.4 Bond to Tillakaratne, (noball) one run, Bond lets an attempted
yorker slip out of his hand, turns into a very high full toss
outside off stump, steers it straight down to third man
49.4 Bond to Muralitharan, bye: one run, much slower ball, shortish,
Muralitharan has a big ugly cross-batted heave at it, missing by a

for a bye as Vincent can't throw down the stumps, and neither can
Bond as he picks up to
have a go at the bowler's end
49.5 Bond to Tillakaratne, one run, very full on the toes, backs away to

that concludes Sri Lanka's innings, a very interesting one indeed,
it's hard to say who will be most satisfied with the score of
272/7 in the end, as New Zealand did very well to haul them back
from what was potentially shaping up as a 300+ total,
particularly the longer Jayasuriya was at the crease
he was easily the stand-out performer, with a blazing 120, taking
advantage of an early let-off, and in partnership with
Tillakaratne, they added 170 for the second wicket, a record for
Sri Lanka against New Zealand in ODIs
but Sri Lanka lost their way from the fall of Jayasuriya after the
second drinks break, thanks to the introduction of slow medium
pacer Astle, who kept it tight, varied his pace and restricted the
Sri Lanka middle order to mostly singles at best, just
when they were looking to up the tempo and press home their great
advantage with plenty of wickets in hand
Tillakaratne, like Jayasuriya, suffered from dehydration towards
the end of his lengthy stay at the crease, getting leg cramps and
requiring a runner for the last few overs, and that stifled his
        plans to attack
he finished up on a highly commendable unbeaten 81, a curious
innings with only 5 boundaries, as he had to run quite a lot with
Jayasuriya and his lower order partners, and this no doubt
contributed to his lack of fluidity towards the end
the next highest contribution is extras with 18, a pretty
disciplined effort from New Zealand, conceding just 9 from wides
and no-balls, a far cry from some of their wayward efforts earlier
        this year
on the bowling side of things, there were three stand-outs, Astle,
the accurate Oram who was highly consistent throughout his two
spells, and Bond, who bowled quick and demandingly across three
separate spells, hurrying up the Sri Lankan batsmen often
no team has successful chased as many runs as this on this ground,
but New Zealand must be feeling much more heartened now that they
restricted so well in the final overs - just 62 off the final 12,
and will be prepared to give it a good dash in a do-or-

in true calypso style, but doesn't quite get enough loft on it,

44.1 Muralitharan to Styris, SIX, shot! Styris is keen to enjoy himself
to the very end, picking up his 4th six of the innings, flighted
up full outside off stump, slog/sweeps it high over midwicket,
just clearing the fielder on the rope
44.2 Muralitharan to Styris, SIX, and he goes again and hits it even
further, great clean sweep shot over deep square leg, moves into

ball, gets it on the half volley, smashes it hard, high and
handsome a long, long way over long on!
45.2 Arnold to Styris, two runs, he goes for another one, this time
miscuing it high over midwicket, landing short of the outfielders
running in, pitches in the deep and they hurry back for a second,
moves into 2nd position on the all-time New Zealand ODI innings
        list, and is the
highest individual score on this ground
45.3 Arnold to Styris, OUT: but it's one too many this time around,
shorter ball, pulls it hard and high, but lofts it straight down
to Vaas running in from deep backward square leg, completing a

Styris' valiant resistance comes to an end, a great knock,
remarkably with twice as many sixes as fours in it, the highest
innings by a New Zealander in over 20 years, and the highest by a
New Zealander against Sri Lanka (beating Glenn Turner's 140 at
Auckland in 1982/83, but with no support whatsoever, it's nowhere
near enough to cement victory for the New Zealanders, Sri Lanka
        running out convincing 47-run victors
Arnold picks up the last 3 wickets of the innings at a bit of a
cost, but it was all really quite academic with a skyrocketing run
        rate required
Styris' 141 is in fact the 7th highest individual score in a losing
effort, and the highest such instance for New Zealand (beating
Chris Harris' 130 in the World Cup 1996 quater-final loss to
        Australia)
it'll be a case of what might've been for the New Zealanders, with
the second highest scorer a remarkable 109 runs behind Styris, his
innings taking up 63% of the team score, and over 67% of the runs
        made off the bat
it was a good even bowling effort from the Sri Lankans, with pretty
much everyone contributing to the effort, Vaas put on the early
pressure which resulted in the crazy run out of Astle, and then
Gunaratne sent Fleming and McMillan on their way quickly
thereafter, meaning New Zealand were always going to be playing
catch-up cricket from that point onwards
there were glimmers of hope when Styris and Cairns rebuilt, then
latter when Harris hung around for a while, but the spin attack
kept persisting and eventually broke through and the lower order
        didn't resist much further
Sanath Jayasuriya is named man of the match for his swashbuckling
        knock of 120
Sri Lanka take the four points, and a big step towards the Super
Six stage, even after just one match, with New Zealand under
extreme pressure to topple first-up winners the West Indies, and
home side South Africa in their next two matches to keep their
hopes alive, thanks to their like forfeiture of points to Kenya
over their refusal to play in Nairobi
