Bangladesh v New Zealand at Kimberley, 26 Feb 2003

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 0800 GMT (10:00 local)

welcome to CricInfo's coverage of the important Pool B match at the
De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley between New Zealand and
        Bangladesh
the weather looks pretty good, and the pitch is said to be an ideal
        batting surface
with that in mind, Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud has chosen to
bat first after winning the toss
there is a reported chance of thunderstorms later on, which will
give the New Zealanders the jitters - they need full points from
this match - but at least by bowling first it gives them a chance
to try and shorten the length of time on the field if they
       play rather well!
Bangladesh have made a few changes, with Al Sahariar, Ehsanul
Haque, Tushar Imran and Talha Jubair all making way for Hannan
Sarkar, Akram Khan, Habibul Bashar and Tapash Baisya
New Zealand too have made changes, with Nathan Astle rested with
two injuries, Lou Vincent dropped and in come Mathew Sinclair and
Kyle Mills to make their World Cup debuts
the umpires and players make their way out to the middle, nice and
sunny and an expected high of 30 degrees in Kimberley later today
it'll be Shane Bond to open the bowling from the North End, bowling
to Hannan Sarkar, with Mohammad Ashraful at the non-striker's end
0.1 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, good fullish length ball cutting
back in from wider outside off stump, stretches well forward,
shouldering arms through to the keeper
0.2 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, digs in a quick short rising ball
just outside off stump, sways the head right back out of the way
        to the keeper
0.3 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, shortish ball cutting back off the
seam from wider outside off stump, again happy to leave alone
        through to the keeper
0.4 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, fuller ball outside off stump, makes
first contact with the ball, easing it nicely but straight towards
        backward point
0.5 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, good quicker full ball angling in
slightly from outside off stump, drives and misses, plays a little
late, 152.8kph, through to the keeper
0.6 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, quick shorter ball angling into the
body, shuffles across the crease, drops down at his feet from the
        thigh pad

it'll be Kyle Mills to bowl to Mohammad Ashraful from the South End
1.1 Mills to Mohammad Ashraful, one run, good start by Mills but it
gets Bangladesh and Ashraful off the mark, fullish and swinging
away outside off stump, pushes tentatively forward at it, gets a
thick outside edge, low in the air but between third slip and
        gully, down to third man
1.2 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, (noball) no run, oversteps, good fullish
ball outside off stump, draws Sarkar forward, drives and misses,
        through to the keeper
1.2 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, FOUR, shot! just overpitches outside off
stump, picks it off very nicely, strongly square driving just in
front of point, races away to the rope
1.3 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, no run, lovely comeback ball from Mills,
fullish ball angling in then straightening off the seam, Sarkar
plays inside the line, doesn't know much about that one, through
        to the keeper
1.4 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, FOUR, a good contest between bat and ball
this over, a little fuller and wider outside off stump, Sarkar
drives uppishly just forward of point, not as well timed this
time, but it just beats a dive from Adams, chasing from point
1.5 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, no run, shortish, straight ball, shuffles
right across the crease, watchfully defending down towards mid on
1.6 Mills to Hannan Sarkar, no run, a bit streaky from Sarkar, shortish
ball angling into the body, the batsman shuffles across the
crease, trying to work it to leg but almost gets a leading edge,
just rolls off the front of the pad and pops up well short of the
        bowler on his follow thro

back of a length, cutting back a long way off the seam, shoulders
arms and it doesn't miss off stump by much, but well judged,
watching the bounce, through to the keeper
2.3 Bond to Mohammad Ashraful, FOUR, Bond strays, shortish ball just

4.1 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, oooh! good inswinging full ball,
tries to drive but is very fortunate to get a little inside edge

4.2 Bond to Hannan Sarkar, no run, drops it in a little shorter,

        return throw is poor also

steers it away into the gully in defence, playing away from his
        body somewhat
7.4 Mills to Sanwar Hossain, no run, shortish, straight ball, tucks it

        to the keeper
8.6 Bond to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, shortish lifting straight ball,
tucks it down in close on the leg side, there's an initial call of
yes but then Ashraful changes his mind as Sanwar comes charging

9.3 Adams to Sanwar Hossain, one run, smart running! tight shortish
ball on off stump, drops it away just forward of point, quick
early call to scamper through for the single as Adams has to race

9.6 Adams to Mohammad Ashraful, no run, similar again, a touch shorter

46.2 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, one run, fullish ball outside off stump,
tries to smash it off the back foot through the off side, chops it
into the ground, up towards long off
46.3 Mills to Khaled Mashud, one run, shortish ball outside off stump,
glides it straight down to third man, milking another single
46.4 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, two runs, fullish ball outside off
stump, smashed down towards wide long off, excellent running by
Mashud to get back for a second on Cairns' return throw
46.5 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, one run, shortish ball outside off
stump, powerfully flat batted over cover, but straight out to the
        sweeper on the bounce
46.6 Mills to Khaled Mashud, no run, oh boy! shorter, slower ball,
Mashud advances to it, slapping it back down the pitch, mistiming
it, Mills dives forward to his right but can't quite hang on to
        the return chance

Mohammad Rafique 24* (32b 2x4 1x6) Khaled Mashud 21* (46b 2x4)

47.1 Adams to Mohammad Rafique, no run, good slower ball outside off
stump, Rafique backs away and has a big swing and a miss
47.2 Adams to Mohammad Rafique, one run, very high full toss outside off
stump, manages to loft it away just over cover, should've been
called a no-ball for height too but isn't
47.3 Adams to Khaled Mashud, FOUR, this pair go from strength to
strength in the dying overs, albeit with some good fortune,
shortish ball just outside off stump, tries to pull, gets a thick
edge which flies through vacant slip, racing down to the boundary
47.4 Adams to Khaled Mashud, FOUR, amazing shot! very full and angling
in on the legs, Mashud gave himself room and whips it away
superbly through wide midwicket, finding the rope again
47.5 Adams to Khaled Mashud, FOUR, three in a row! overpitched outside
off stump and Mashud slams it away through cover this time,
leaving another sweeping fielder for dead
47.6 Adams to Khaled Mashud, one run, very full and straight, goes for
another big hit but has to settle for a quick single, dragging an
inside edge into the legs, drops away in close square on the off
        side

End of over 48 (14 runs) Bangladesh 180/7 (RR: 3.75)

Khaled Mashud 34* (50b 5x4) Mohammad Rafique 25* (34b 2x4 1x6)

48.1 Mills to Khaled Mashud, no run, digs in a good short rising ball
which follows the batsman, Mashud falls to the deck trying to
        avoid it
48.2 Mills to Khaled Mashud, no run, another good shortish ball follows
the batsman down the leg side, swish and a miss as he has no room
to free the arms, through to the keeper
48.3 Mills to Khaled Mashud, one run, and another short ball angling
down the leg side, this time Mashud stays inside the line,
would've been called wide had he left it alone, goes for a big
pull shot but misplays it, dragging it into the ground, McCullum
across to field inside the circle
48.4 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, no run, digs in a good short rising
straight ball, Rafique backs a long way back outside leg stump,
another big swing and a miss, giving himself too much room this
        time
48.5 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, FOUR, what a shot! innovation the name
of the game, full outside off stump, Rafique goes all the way out
to it, drop-kicking it over backward square leg, knowing that fine
leg is up inside the circle
48.6 Mills to Mohammad Rafique, two runs, slower ball, short and
straight, slapped down towards long on, again Mashud does very
well to race back for the second, the throw goes to the keeper's
end and McCullum whips off the bails, but the runner Sarkar is
        safely home

End of over 49 (7 runs) Bangladesh 187/7 (RR: 3.82)
KD Mills 6-0-32-0 (2nb) - North End
Khaled Mashud 35* (53b 5x4) Mohammad Rafique 31* (37b 3x4 1x6)

interestingly it'll be Scott Styris to bowl his first over ... the
last of the innings, at the South End!
49.1 Styris to Khaled Mashud, bye: one run, oh boy, more hilarity,
quick, full and wide outside off stump, looks to drive but then
tries to deflect it away, misses, McCullum attempts a stumping but
it comes loose from the gloves and rolls away into space in the
        infield to concede a run
49.2 Styris to Mohammad Rafique, two runs, fullish, straight ball,
strongly driven down towards long on, quickly back for a second
        once again
49.3 Styris to Mohammad Rafique, no run, good slower ball turning away
outside off stump, goes for a big hoick over midwicket but plays
too soon, swing and a miss through to the keeper
49.4 Styris to Mohammad Rafique, two runs, very full and straight, digs
it out from his toes, played down towards long on, excellent
running to scamper back for the second again, sluggish outfielding
        once more
49.5 Styris to Mohammad Rafique, SIX, and he does it again! backs away
to another slower, straight ball, lofts it powerfully over extra
cover, Vettori leaps back on the boundary rope to attempt the
catch but falls over the rope, just hit strong enough!
49.6 Styris to Mohammad Rafique, no run, quick and full outside off
stump, swing and a miss, McCullum partially stops it, rebounding
into the stumps, and that ends the innings on a rather tame note

End of over 50 (11 runs) Bangladesh 198/7 (RR: 3.96)
SB Styris 1-0-10-0 - South End
Khaled Mashud 35* (54b 5x4) Mohammad Rafique 41* (42b 3x4 2x6)

a fantastic finish for Bangladesh, almost touching the 200 mark,
unthinkable when they were 128/7 in the 39th over - unthinkable
for virtually any side, let alone the struggling Bangladesh,
        really
a record partnership for the 8th wicket for Bangladesh achived by
Mashud and Rafique, their 70* knocking off the 60-run stand
between Mashud and Tapash Baisya against South Africa at
        Potchefstoom earlier this season
the stand taking just 69 balls, a fantastic effort, taking
advantage of a wayward latter overs effort by the complacent New
Zealanders, who had done a tough grafting job in the field earlier
on, gradually chipping away at the top order, but failing to
finish them off, and found their match in the gritty Mashud and
plucky Rafique, who wasn't afraid to improvise at every
opportunity, despite being incapacitated by a blow to the leg
        earlier on in his innings
before this stand things were rather bleak for Bangladesh, the
clear stand-out being Mohammad Ashraful's 56 scored in good time,
learning to leave judiciously outside off stump, though the pull
shot wasn't his best executed today, attempting it many
times, often with streaky success, and one big let-off, when
dropped by Cairns, with the trap set in the deep behind square, a
relative sitter when he was on 24, and the total 51/3 at that
stage, and he went on to add another 32 to register his maiden
ODI 50, and just the fourth 50 in 10 World Cup appearances by a
        Bangladeshi batsman
New Zealand's bowling effort was inconsistent, with Mills and
Cairns struggling to put it on the spot regularly, the 10 overs
between them and final-over man Styris costing 59 runs
Adams started well, but his final 3-over spell was carted for 27
        runs, bloating his figures dramatically
Bond, Oram and Vettori were the clear leaders with the ball in
hand, a blend of pure firepower, accuracy and guile, tying down
        the middle order excellently
so, New Zealand face an interesting challenge, needing 199 to win
at 3.98 per over for victory, a must-win game, one they expected
to win before the start, however Bangladesh have gone 30 ODIs in a
row since their shock 1999 World Cup upset of Pakista
without a victory, and this is the sort of tricky total that has
seen more fancied opponents slip up against lesser opposition a
few times before - look no further than Monday, when Kenya
successfully defended 210 against Sri Lanka
New Zealand are still hot favourites to win this match, but if an
early wicket or two should fall, then things may become rather
intriguing - please join us again in around 30 minutes time at
1:15pm local time (1215 GMT) for the start of the chase

Match State: Innings Break

the players make their way back to the middle, and it'll be Craig
McMillan to take first strike to Manjural Islam, with Stephen
        Fleming at the non-striker's end
0.1 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, good shortish ball angling
across the right-hander just outside off stump, holds the bat
inside the line to leave to the keeper
0.2 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, similar again, good shortish
ball slanting away just outside off stump, left alone to the
        keeper
0.3 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, excellent ball! very similar,
consistent line and length, seaming it across the right-hander,
McMillan has a little dabble, through to the keeper
0.4 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, boy oh boy! bang on target
again by Manjural, McMillan dices with death by pushing away from
his body, almost steering an edge straight to second slip, just
falling short of the fielder there
0.5 Manjural Islam to McMillan, FOUR, take that! McMillan becomes more
forthright and it pays dividends, shortish rising ball outside off
stump, cuts powerfully in the air through backward point, just
wide of the fielder inside the circle and races to the boundary to
        beat third man
0.6 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, good shortish rising ball
angling across the right-hander outside off stump, has a small
dabble at it, beaten through to the keeper, unconvincingly half
shout for a catch by some of the Bangladeshi fielders

from outside off stump, McMillan pushes half forward in defence
rather late, strikes pad then bat as he defends in close on the
off side, appeal for lbw, but struck outside the line of off stump
        says umpire Shepherd
1.6 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, good fullish, straight ball,
leans well forward, defending back on the leg side of the pitch

2.1 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good shortish ball seaming back
in to the left-hander from outside off stump, shuffles across
towards it before raising the arms up high to leave it, taken high
on the front pad, loud shout for lbw turned down by umpire Hair,
        not coming back in enough
2.2 Manjural Islam to Fleming, one run, shortish ball just straying on
to the legs, clipped away through backward square leg for a
leisurely single as long leg is around to field in the deep
2.3 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, shortish ball on off stump,
gets right across in behind it, nudging it away to point in
        defence
2.4 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, good tight fullish ball on off
stump, props well forward in defence, solidly playing it down into
        the covers
2.5 Manjural Islam to McMillan, FOUR, a little too short outside off
stump, McMillan spots it quickly and is into position smartly,
pulling powerfully through wide midwicket, fetching it but doing
        it authoritatively
that stroke brings up his 3000th ODI run in his 127th match also
2.6 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, tight shortish ball on off
stump, steered away to point in defence

off the legs straight to midwicket
3.2 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, no run, good tight shortish ball on off
stump, squared around a little in defence as he came across to get
in behind it, plays it down into the covers
3.3 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, wide: no run, short and rather wide
outside off stump, seaming further away, Fleming was interested in
chasing after it but couldn't quite reach, through to the keeper
3.3 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, no run, dropped! a big chance goes
begging for Bangladesh early on, Tapash digs it in rather short
outside off stump, leaving Fleming a little, he tries to pull it
across the line, drags it straight to Habibul at midwicket, but he
        can't hang on to it
3.4 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, one run, oh dear, and to rub salt into
the wound, Fleming drives a full ball strongly up towards mid off,
a regulation stop required, but it sneaks through the fielder's
legs to concede a single, sloppy
3.5 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, tight shortish ball on off
stump, forced off the back foot down into the covers

4.1 Manjural Islam to Fleming, one run, shortish ball seaming into the
left-hander, Fleming shuffles right across his crease, gets a
little inside edge into the thigh pad, drops away towards square
leg, good quick single taken as Manjural appeals hopefully for lbw
4.2 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, tight fuller ball on off stump,
props well forward, easing it away to point in defence
4.3 Manjural Islam to McMillan, two runs, full on the legs, just
straying a little, well worked away through backward square leg,
quickly back for a second on the return from the long leg fielder
        coming around in the deep
4.4 Manjural Islam to McMillan, FOUR, shot! shortish ball outside off
stump, stands tall, getting right over the top of it and punches
it strongly off the back foot down through point, very well timed
        stroke

now, safely shouldered arms through to the keeper

forward, running it away off the face down to third man to retain

shouldering arms through to the keeper
5.3 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, one run, tight, fuller ball outside off
stump, Fleming does well to open the face and guide it wide of
gully, nicely timed using the pace of the ball, but can't get any
more than a single from it as third man is smartly around and
        fires it back quickly
5.4 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, shortish, straight ball on off
stump, chops it down into the pitch at his feet in defence

5.6 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, shortish lifting ball just
outside off stump, cuts powerfully into the ground, bounces
straight up to point, there's a shy at the bowler's end to keep

ball just outside off stump, Fleming tries to move across to it
but ends up cramping himself up, chopping a bottom edge into the
deck, bouncing away just past off stump through to the keeper
6.2 Manjural Islam to Fleming, FOUR, lovely stroke! a little
overpitched, Fleming extends the front foot well forward to it,
sweetly driving down the ground on the leg side, beautiful timing
and it beats a despairing dive by Mahmud from wider at mid on
6.3 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good fullish ball swinging back
in from outside off stump, props well forward, squared around in
defence as he solidly plays it back to the bowler

6.6 Manjural Islam to McMillan, no run, full and straight on off stump,
strongly drives straight back down the pitch, Manjural shows off
some of his soccer skills, thrusting his left boot out to it,
deflecting the ball away to mid off to save at least two runs, if
        not four

7.1 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, FOUR, shot! Fleming advances down the
track to break up Tapash's so-far consistent length, smashing it
straight back down the pitch, in the air, lofting on the up, just
clearing the head of umpire Shepherd, rockets away to the rope
7.2 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, FOUR, and another! Tapash is rattled now,
tries to dig in a shorter ball but at his pace it just sits up,
Fleming hooks pretty well, hard and high over backward square leg,
one bounce and away it goes
7.3 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, SIX, brilliant from Fleming, he's
completely got the bowler off kilter now, bowling another loose
short ball, this one is superbly struck, powerfully pulled in the
same direction, but incredibly hard and flat, and goes all the
        way!
7.4 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, FOUR, Fleming on fire! Tapash has no
answer, this time bowling it fuller, and wider outside off stump,
Fleming charges, picking up a half volley, struck very hard and
flat, and just lands a matter of inches inside the rope at extra
        cover
the field spreads as much as it can inside the first 15 overs now,
Bangladesh suddenly on the defensive to Fleming
7.5 Tapash Baisya to Fleming, one run, slower ball, full and straight,
Fleming is content to quietly turn it off the legs out to the man
now posted at deep square leg for a single
7.6 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, shortish lifting ball on off

stump, leans well forward, shouldering arms through to the keeper
8.2 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, full and straight outside off

8.3 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, full and relatively wide outside
off stump, happy to let it go through to the keeper
8.4 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good shortish ball probing in a
similar line outside off stump, not particularly close to the
batsman, just a bit wider, tempting a stroke but Fleming doesn't
        bite, left to the keeper
8.5 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, similar again but this time the
batsman shuffles across to it, forcing it into the ground,
        bouncing away to point
8.6 Manjural Islam to Fleming, no run, good fuller ball outside off

off stump, McMillan flashes at it, reaching away from his body,
plays and misses, through to the keeper
9.2 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, and again! a near carbon copy of
the ball prior, Tapash digging it in well outside off stump,
McMillan flays at it away from his body, missing through to the
        keeper
9.3 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, superb delivery! has McMillan in
a spot of bother now, similar length ball, but a touch straighter
and cuts back off the seam, cuts the batsman in half, somehow just
passing over the top of off stump through to the keeper, a corker
9.4 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, no run, great fielding! short lifting
ball outside off stump, powerfully forces it away towards backward
point, Alok flings himself full stretch to his left to pluck it
out of the air from the bounce, brilliant Jontyesque bit of work
9.5 Tapash Baisya to McMillan, FOUR, but McMillan wins the war after
Tapash wins the battle, advances to a fullish ball, picking up a
half volley and smashing it in the air, straight down the ground
        on the off side

12.1 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, starts off with a full toss, but
isn't punished for it, very straight, drives forcefully straight
        up to mid off
12.2 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, good length ball outside off
stump, cuts and misses, playing over the top of it as the
trajectory from Mahmud is rather flat, from a relatively short
        bowler
12.3 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, similar again, this time chops
it into the ground, bounces away to point
12.4 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, slightly fuller outside off
stump, strongly punched into the covers, but again finds a fielder
12.5 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, FOUR, oooh! McMillan doesn't want to be
pegged down for too long, wasn't a bad length ball outside off
stump, but by advancing down the track McMillan breaks things up,
lofting on the up just over the head of extra cover, safely enough
        but wasn't too far
over the top really, just brute upper body strength in the shot to
        carry it away
12.6 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, FOUR, and a good over is ruined in the

13.2 Alok Kapali to Fleming, no run, flighted up on off stump, leans

13.3 Alok Kapali to Fleming, two runs, dangerous stuff from Fleming,

with the simplest of ease, 11 runs come from the over, milking five
singles and dispatching a half volley over the top
24.1 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, one run, shortish ball outside off
stump, back cuts straight down to third man, using the pace of the
        delivery
24.2 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, one run, shorter ball outside off stump,
Styris stands tall, punching off the back foot straight down to
        long off
24.3 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, slower, fullish ball outside off
stump, McMillan waits on it, guiding it away straight to backward
        point
24.4 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, no run, full on off stump, firmly drives
straight up to Khan at mid off
24.5 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, SIX, McMillan tucks into another half
volley, full on off stump, picks it up powerfully, sending it
sailing a long way back over long on, enjoying himself now
24.6 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, one run, oooh! technically a dropped
chance, a very difficult strangulation job that would've been too,
short and very wide down the leg side, McMillan chases after it,
gets a little nibble to it, but it goes in and out of Mashud's
        gloves, rebounding away

End of over 25 (9 runs) New Zealand 129/2 (RR: 5.16 RRR: 70/25 = 2.80)

towards vacant short midwicket, and both batsmen are alert enough
        to steal a quick single
25.1 Sanwar Hossain to McMillan, no run, flat ball turning in from off
stump, forced off the back foot up to mid on
25.2 Sanwar Hossain to McMillan, one run, shorter ball turning in from
outside off stump, forced away out to the cover sweeper
25.3 Sanwar Hossain to Styris, one run, rather short and sits up outside
off stump, cut strongly straight out to deep point
25.4 Sanwar Hossain to McMillan, FOUR, shot! drops it in just a little
short, McMillan frees the arms a little and powers it over wide
midwicket, finding the gap in the deep perfectly, just bouncing
wide of the sweeper out there
25.5 Sanwar Hossain to McMillan, one run, flat ball just outside off
stump, dabs it neatly fine, short third man across to field
25.6 Sanwar Hossain to Styris, one run, flighted up fuller on the legs,
clipped out to deep midwicket to retain the strike, something
Styris hasn't seen much of recently

stump, cut hard into the ground, cover point across to field

from just outside off stump, driven sweetly straight down to long
        off
26.4 Khaled Mahmud to McMillan, OUT: McMillan throws his wicket away
needlessly, trying to get far too cute, jumps well outside off
stump, trying to scoop a shortish ball away very fine, but it's
too quick for him and goes crashing into the top of middle stump

in the air, but well wide of slip, down to third man to get off
        the mark
26.6 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, one run, fair length ball outside off
stump, stands tall on the crease, driving straight down to long
        off

Tapash returns, replacing Sanwar at the South End
27.1 Tapash Baisya to Styris, no run, shortish ball outside off stump,
Styris tries to pull across the line, drags it straight down to
        mid on on the bounce
27.2 Tapash Baisya to Styris, FOUR, shot! too short from Tapash and is
duly dispatched, swung away powerfully through backward square leg
27.3 Tapash Baisya to Styris, two runs, oooh! Styris going for his shots
now, almost gets into trouble with this one, fullish ball outside
off stump, advancing to it, has to reach away from his body a fair
bit, lofts it hard and high over extra cover, just lands short of
        the long off man
       racing around to it
27.4 Tapash Baisya to Styris, no run, looks to advance again but is
outfoxed by Tapash, holds it back a little and follows the
batsman, cramping him up with a shortish ball, forced to defend
        down into the covers
27.5 Tapash Baisya to Styris, no run, excellent follow-up ball too, much
quicker and very full, chasing Styris down the leg side, swing and
a miss, through to the keeper
27.6 Tapash Baisya to Styris, one run, shortish ball just outside off
stump, glides it off the face down to third man

28.1 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, one run, charges a full ball outside off
stump, turning it into a low full toss, gets hold of it well, but
strikes it straight out to the cover sweeper
28.2 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, one run, full and straight outside off
stump, hammered back down the pitch past the bowler, long off does
very well to get across in front of the sightscreen and fire it
back to keep them to just a single
28.3 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, one run, slower, shortish ball sits up on
off stump, driven from the crease straight out to deep cover
that brings up the New Zealand 150 in 172 balls
28.4 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, one run, good slower ball on off stump,
Cairns nudges it up towards mid on, stealing through for a cheeky
quick single with the shot, there's a shy at the bowler's end but
        it's wide anyway
28.5 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, no run, fullish ball angling into the
legs, clipped away strongly but straight to midwicket
28.6 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, two runs, very full and straight,
powerfully driven straight back down the pitch past the bowler,
long on gets across, sticking a boot out to stop it just inside
the boundary, allows them time to get back for a second as a
        result however

29.1 Tapash Baisya to Cairns, FOUR, brilliant shot from Cairns! full and
angling in on the toes, uses the feet wonderfully to drive wide of
mid on, power and timing, classy stroke, rockets to teh fence
29.2 Tapash Baisya to Cairns, FOUR, shot! Cairns is in no mood to hang
around, too short from Tapash, sits up outside off stump, stand
and deliver from the batsman, swings it away over midwicket, one
        bounce and over the boundary
29.3 Tapash Baisya to Cairns, no run, full outside off stump, strongly
        driven straight t oextra cover
29.4 Tapash Baisya to Cairns, one run, very full outside off stump, jams
the bat down on it, squeezing it away to backward point, Cairns
looks for a quick run but is sent back, there's a shy from side on
at the keeper's end, just misses and they get an overthrow as the
        nearest fielder
backing up is out at deep square leg
29.5 Tapash Baisya to Styris, FOUR, shot! low, straight full toss and
Styris dispatches it, powering it over wide long on, just bounces
        inside the rope
29.6 Tapash Baisya to Styris, no run, good attempted yorker coming back
in to Styris, just manages to jam the bat down on it, digging it
out back on the leg side of the pitch to a rather unhappy Tapash

End of over 30 (13 runs) New Zealand 166/3 (RR: 5.53 RRR: 33/20 = 1.65)

steers it straight down to third man, walking through for the
        single
30.2 Khaled Mahmud to Styris, one run, slower, shortish ball outside off
stump, powerfully forced straight out to deep cover
30.3 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, no run, good slower, fuller ball on off
stump, Cairns is watchfully forward, stroking it firmly straight
back down the pitch, hits the stumps at the non-striker's end
30.4 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, two runs, full and straying down the leg
side, clipped away through backward square leg, smartly back for
the second as the return from the deep is poor
30.5 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, two runs, very full and straight, drives
through wide mid on, long on around in the deep to field, an even
        easier two available this time
30.6 Khaled Mahmud to Cairns, no run, shortish ball just outside off
stump, tries to dab it behind point but misses, Mashud fumbles the
        take

Mahmud completes an excellent 10-over spell, the only wicket-taker
of the innings, but even he can't stop New Zealand roaring to a
        comfortable victory
the only thing up in the air now is the victory margin, both in
terms of wickets in hand and how many overs to spare - the latter
being more crucial to New Zealand, who are going after everything
        now
Alok returns, replacing Tapash at the South End
31.1 Alok Kapali to Styris, one run, flighted up full on the legs,
glanced away down towards fine leg
31.2 Alok Kapali to Cairns, no run, nicely flighted up on off stump,
leans well forward, watchfully defending down in close on the off
        side
31.3 Alok Kapali to Cairns, one run, very well flighted outside off
stump, has Cairns deceived as he looks to advance but isn't to the
pitch of it, has to adjust and poke it away to backward point,
scampers through for a tight quick single, throw goes wide at the
        bowler's end
31.4 Alok Kapali to Styris, one run, flighted up outside off stump,
powerfully driven straight down to long off
31.5 Alok Kapali to Cairns, SIX, what a shot! that is a humungous
strike! flighted up too invitingly and Cairns lofts it straight
back over the bowler's head ... and straight over the pavilion
too! that is one mighty, mighty blow
Cairns just stands and admires his handiwork, a little delay as the
ball is retrieved in the meantime
31.6 Alok Kapali to Cairns, one run, *thwack*, but only for a single
this time, making room by shuffling outside leg to a flatter ball,
smacks it straight down to long off to keep the strike

End of over 32 (10 runs) New Zealand 182/3 (RR: 5.69 RRR: 17/18 = 0.94)

just 17 needed in 18 overs now, New Zealand will be looking to
knock off these runs in 2 more overs tops, in order to maximise
        their net run rate
Manjural returns, replacing Mahmud at the North End
32.1 Manjural Islam to Cairns, FOUR, what a shot! Cairns unleashing,
this is one great little cameo to finish things off, full and
angling in on leg stump, but Cairns steps well outside leg to
smash it hard and flat over extra cover, one bounce and over the
        boundary
32.2 Manjural Islam to Cairns, one run, slower, shortish, straight ball,
tucks it off the hip to backward square leg, tight quick single
taken, a shy at the keeper's end misses as Styris scampers through
32.3 Manjural Islam to Styris, SIX, anything Cairns can do, I can do
just as well, says Styris! Manjural drops it in short and Styris
pounds it hard and high over midwicket, that's a big boundary, and
it cleared it by quite some margin
32.4 Manjural Islam to Styris, one run, full outside off stump, smashed
along the ground down to wide long off, New Zealand just one big
hit away from finishing it off now
32.5 Manjural Islam to Cairns, two runs, very full and straying down the
leg side, gets a little tickle fine, Mashud dives to his left,
just slowing its progress down enough to save a boundary, chased
down just inside the rope by short fine leg, three to win
32.6 Manjural Islam to Cairns, no run, good sharp short lifting straight
ball, Cairns is a little surprised by it, fending it down at his
        feet in defence

Mohammad Ashraful on to bowl for Alok at the South End
33.1 Mohammad Ashraful to Styris, one run, flighted up full on off
stump, comes well forward, driving off the toes out to deep
        midwicket
33.2 Mohammad Ashraful to Cairns, one run, flighted up full and
straight, Cairns just leans on it, nudging it away towards wide
mid on, running with the stroke, scores now level
33.3 Mohammad Ashraful to Styris, one run, flighted up full and
straight, quietly driven down wide of mid on, down to wide long on
for an easy single, an anti-climactic finish after a string of big
hitting, but it gets the job done, New Zealand victorious by seven
wickets with 99 balls to spare
a very handy 61-run partnership in just 41 balls from Styris and
Cairns to finish things off, a pretty comprehensive win for New
Zealand, though they won't be entirely satisfied with their all-
        round performance today
they will no doubt believe they gave Bangladesh 30-50 runs more
than they should've in the end, lengthening their chase
considerably, which was done pretty safely throughout, but there
were stuttery periods where runs didn't exactly flow off the bat
all five batsmen used got starts and made contributions, McMillan
leading the way, 'born again' as an opening batsman to fill a role
in South Africa, smacking 75 off 83 balls in typical belligerent
fashion, being rather inventive at times, though
ultimately it also caused his downfall in less-than-glamorous style
Fleming looked very classy again, following on from his epic ton
against South Africa, but attempted an inexplicable stroke, and
though replays show it is hard to tell whether he was caught
directly off the knee or there was a little underedge first, he
paid the price and had to depart, Adams came in and played a handy
little cameo before Styris and Cairns came together to do the
        final damage
not much to talk about in terms of the Bangladesh bowling, except
for Khaled Mahmud, who bowled his 10 overs straight, being very
hard to get away, mixing up his pace and taking all three wickets
to fall, an impressive performance given his side and
fellow bowlers were on a hiding to nothing once New Zealand made a
safe start and an upset wasn't really on the cards any more
time for the presentations, and it should be a toss-up for Man of
the Match between Shane Bond and Craig McMillan today
and for his punishing knock of 75 from 83 deliveries, match referee
