ICC Trophy News - The Grounds

The grounds on which the tournament will be played has a rich and
varied  history.   Some  are fairly old and steeped in cricketing
tradition.  Others are comparatively new, but all have  excellent
facilities and true grass wickets.

NAIROBI CLUB - Founded in 1901, cricket was first played  at  the
club    in   1910.    Early  matches  were  mainly  Officials  v.
Settlers and Europeans v. Asians.  The club was the first to have
a   grass  wicket,   which   was  laid  by Don Pringle, father of
England test player Derek, and himself a fine bowler  who  played
for  Kenya   and  East  Africa.   the  club,  situated 10 minutes
from Nairobi city centre,  has  accomodation  (65  rooms),  other
sporting   facilities, include, hockey, tennis, swimming, squash,
bowls and snooker.

NAIROBI GYMKHANA - Founded in 1926, cricket was first played here
in  1948.  Originally called Suleiman Vergee Indian Gymkhana, the
club has a proud record of cricketing successbeing  seven   times
league  winners, six times knockout winners and seven times Uhuru
Cup champions.  The club, situated 5 minutes  from  city  centre,
has residential accomodation.

SIMBA UNION - Founded in 1918, when it was called  Khalsa  Sports
Club,  cricket  has  been played here since 1932.  The club has a
proud record of supplying players for the national teams for both
cricket  and  hockey.   Winners  of M.R.D'Souza cup in 1945, they
have also reached the finals of the knockout tournament 4  times.
Situated on Forest Road, 5 minutes from the city centre, the club
has facilities for tennis, hockey, squash and badminton.

AGA KHAN CLUB - Cricket has been played here since 1944, although
the  club  was  formed  four years earlier.  The club has enjoyed
regular cricket success, having been twice  winners of  the   KCA
league  and  Uhuru  Cup  and three times knockout champions.  The
club also supplied four players for the Kenyan team in  the  1990
ICC  Trophy  and  has regularly toured India and Pakistan.  Other
sports facilities include tennis, swimming, squash, snooker and a
gymnasium.

SIR ALI MUSLIM CLUB - Founded in 1930, the club has been  playing
cricket  since 1936 and has achieved considerable success as mul-
tiple winners of the KCA league, knockout and Uhuru Cup, particu-
larly  in the 1970's.  Situated off Park Road, a few minutes from
city centre, the club also has facilities for squash,  badminton,
snooker and volleyball.

PREMIER CLUB - Cricket has been played here since  1936,  a  year
after  the  club  was formed.  Winners of the KCA league in 1977,
Premier have also regularly supplied players for the Kenyan  team
and  have  also  toured  India.  Situated on Forest Road (between
Gymkhana and Simba), the club has a  swimming pool  as  well   as
tennis, squash, volleyball, badminton and snooker facilities.

RUARAKA SPORTS CLUB - Founded in 1938 when it was called Kathiwar
Sports  Club,  the  club  has  been  playing  cricket ever since,
although the present ground has been used since 1959.  An  exten-
sive  programme  of  developing  the club facilities was recently
completed with the building of a new pavilion.  The club won  the
KCA  league in 1976.  Other facilities include tennis, badminton,
volleyball and snooker.  The club is situated off Thika Road,  10
minutes from the city centre, near the Utalii Hotel.

IMPALA CLUB - Formely known as Old Cambrian, the club has  played
cricket  since 1946. Playing highlight came in 1973 when the club
won the KCA knockout tournament.  Situated on Ngang Road about 15
minutes  from  the city centre, the club also has a swimming pool
and facilities for rugby, squash, tennis and snooker.

NGARA SPORTS CLUB - One of the two clubs devoted solely to crick-
et,  Ngara  has  been  playing  the game since 1954.  The present
ground, however, is one of the newest in the league,  established
in  1985.   The  clubs proudest achievement is winning of the KCS
league. Situated in Nairobi South C, 10 minutes from the city.

NAIROBI JAFFERY - Founded in 1978, the club  only  plays  cricket
and were the winners of the KCA league in 1992, when in fact they
moved to their present ground, which is the newest in Kenya.   It
is situated in the pleasant Lavington suburb, 10 minutes from the
city centre.

dition  times  -  that  is,  when  there is no traffic - which is
around midnight :-).)
