Brett Lee has received the support of Ricky Ponting, his captain, to play county cricket in England prior to the Ashes. Lee, who has been performing 12th man duties throughout the Australian season, had received offers from four county sides - Worcestershire, Leicestershire, Surrey and Middlesex to play this season. However, Cricket Australia and John Buchanan, their coach, had advised their players not to risk their fitness problems leading up to the Ashes.
"It's a decision that has to be made by the individual and what they think is best for their game," said Ponting to ABC. "I know there has been some speculation in the last couple of weeks about Brett playing some county cricket leading into the Ashes series. That, once again, is a decision for him, and if he thinks that's the best for his cricket then I think he should go ahead and do that."
Lee had stormed back into the one-day side against New Zealand, and proved to be the best bowler for Australia. However he failed to make it in the Test squad, and also missed the Pura Cup final in Australia. Lee has expressed his frustration at being on the sidelines all season. The first Ashes Test is due to start at Lord's from July 21.
